Dernhem, The Fair Harvest Inn, Mid-morning....

I started this one a year ago, actually, and it still took me about ten hours once I hit the inking step. It's good to have it done, anyway.

I'm 200 comments behind now, and I'm going to get caught up before I post the next pages.

Enjoy!

Reasonably sure I would go insane drawing/inking the cobbled streets and the roof shingles. That or just start seeing everything in gray-scale.[link]

Beautiful detail... It irks me that you pull this off seemingly effortlessly

Don't let it irk you too much--the picture took me about eight hours, all said and done, and about four of that was inking shingles and cobblestones... Thanks!

Those cobblestones must've been a pain. Still great. I like the chimneys all smoking in unison.

Thank you! Yeah, the cobblestones took a tedious while, but I don't mind that so much--it allows me to think, and thinking is important...

It must have taken incredible focus. Or at least appropriate breaks so that one didn't become sloppy.

"It's oh-so quiet . . . it's oh-so still . . ."

Nice overview.

Not that I would know for sure, but it seems like a picture like that would be REALLY hard to draw. Was it?

Anyway, I'm eagerly waiting for the quiet to be rudely shattered . . .

faile35 In reply to Yggi11 [2008-05-10 06:14:18 +0000 UTC]

Actually, other than the rather tedious (Jeff's Interpretation: "therapeutic" ) approach to the shingles and cobblestones, it was just a matter of double-checking my idea for architecture, and then throwing together a two-point perspective of a street corner. Not to sound pompous, but I've been doing two-point perspective since I was about ten years old (although I've gotten better at it over the years). Three-point perspective took me a few years more to fully pick up.

As far as the rude shattering of the quiet this picture represents, I'm putting together pages 16, 17, and 18 now, and things are starting to get pretty loud...

Thanks for the compliment!

The roofs impress me; they look like actual wooden shingles. The shadows "follow" each other nicely, and aren't overpowering.

I like the people in the corner, by the well--I wonder what they're talking about. You have a strong sense of how to "move" a viewer's eye through the picture. Wonderful ^_^

faile35 In reply to Jheti [2008-07-06 17:13:01 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for noting on the "moving the viewer's eye through the picture" idea, because it is something I consciously try to manipulate as I draw. This one was definitely full of that, since it was going to have so much to pull the eye this way and that. I'm glad you like it. I'm convinced that the cobblestone road needs a bit less contrast, but I'll fix that later.

Wow great job on the town and its buildings, once again I do think the cobble stones are a bit too sharp, too defined; they pop out too much. But other than that, I think this is great, nice atmosphere as well

faile35 In reply to pinda [2008-07-06 06:36:52 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I might darken in the streets a tad--take the contrast down a bit.

Damn, dude, that's gorgeous. Not only do I appreciate old-fashioned, Euro-looking architecture, I also highly respect anyone who can actually draw it well!!

Cause I like using quaint villages like this as settings for my monster stories, but I find drawing them a struggle. I was never good at buildings... ARG!! Bravo, man. I love this.

faile35 In reply to BryanBaugh [2008-07-06 06:38:38 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I find it quite enjoyable to see the environment in which the debauchery is to take place... And medieval architecture is fun and pretty easy, considering how few straight lines they actually manage (excepting gothic cathedrals, or course, which are astounding).

BryanBaugh In reply to faile35 [2008-07-06 09:18:14 +0000 UTC]

It's true - I have found in creating my comics that the stories and characters always seem to come alive and seem so much more "real" when you build a solid environment around them. I definitely agree with that. But unfortunately it doesn't help the fact that I still suck at drawing buildings!! So I just have to do it anyway and fake my way through it! I guess that's how you learn.

Nothing sucks about these things: [link] [link] [link] [link] Although most of them don't show the entire building, they're all convincing and cool enough.

BryanBaugh In reply to faile35 [2008-07-06 20:43:22 +0000 UTC]

Haha, well, thanks for that compliment. But in all of them you can tell I'm hiding the buildings as much as possible!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

faile35 In reply to BryanBaugh [2008-07-06 21:08:28 +0000 UTC]

Kind of a "glass is half-empty" way of looking at it, I'd think, except that you are the actual artist and so your opinions should go unquestioned. Were it up to me, I'd say instead that you used as much of the buildings as you needed to get the picture looking spectacular.
