***********************************************

Luther awakens to a hoarse scream gurgling in his extended throat, and sits up. He is disoriented for a moment before the last instant in the hallway with Elina comes back to him. The hands, gnarled, powerful, and twisted in unnatural non-life, had driven him into the portcullis, striking his head against it with a blinding light that scattered his thoughts.

"Elina," he croaks. "What... where did you go?"

***********************************************

NOTE (January 6, 2013): At about 9:20 am this morning (MST), ~shadow07203 correctly identified to me in a note that Luther Vandermoor's stock model is our own ~Mistersneaky . He beat ~john33 's guess by an hour, although John's guess does appear first. It might be fun to go back through these past few Luther images and read ~Mistersneaky 's comments about the stock model in question. He made some comical insider remarks at his own expense that had me rolling...

NOTE 2 (same day): We'll call this "The Chainmail Issue." From the very beginning of drawing Luther's chainmail, I recognized that my approach to it was only the best I could do at the time without going into a chainmail research spiral that may or may not produce what I wanted and would have taken a lot of time. Instead, my intention was that by selecting out the chainmail on each page in a digital psd file, if I ever figured out a better way to do it, I would be able to replace or modify what was there fairly easily. I have all those digital files for every page in which the chainmail appears, but I haven't figured out a better way to do it yet. Gotta get through the Rats revision first. With all respect due my fellow artists on DA and elsewhere, I haven't seen a practical solution to the chainmail issue that I liked more than my own, though there are some very good ones. I think *dashinvaine has a great thing going here ( [link] ) and elsewhere in his gallery, but my only attempt at working something like that out myself didn't improve it in my eyes. I had an idea last Summer about how to perhaps digitally work my chainmail design a bit, and I think I'm going to try that out. Regardless, I'm certain that the final production will contain a chainmail issue blooper that has Luther trying on a variety of chainmail designs, including plaid, paisley, etc...

Luther's stock model sent me a bunch of pictures for this sequence, of which I have used two thus far. Guess the deviant and get a prize! Also, I believe the deviant in question is posting the reference I used for this in his gallery.

Enjoy!

You're correct! This time, ~shadow07203 beat you to it in a note by about an hour.

Jeff ol' buddy... I've been hesitant to mention it, 'cause I don't think there's anything you can do about it other than log an additional 1,000 hours for every drawing that features Luther... but your "chain mail" looks like printed fabric. (And this from a guy who can barely draw a stick fugure. Geesh!) Anyway, just thought I'm be a prick and mention it.

Thanks.

Ya know, there may be something you can do in future Luther pics: concentrate on the margins, by which I mean the very edge of the chainmail garment and Luther, where chain mail meets air. If the edges were more 3D, the point would be made---"This is chain mail!"---and the eye might "forgive" the more 2D nature of the rest. Know what I mean?

Do this: ^^^^^^^^^^^ as opposed to this: __________.

Understand? Good. Now, please explain it to me because I'm confused.

I totally understand your point there. I'll try it out on the next image.

My idea is actually to create a digital texture using interlocking circles with some highlights and lay that over the top of the patterns I've got down. In spite of the "woven cloth" appearance of the stuff as is, chain mail is actually woven, so I don't think I'm that far off. Ridging up the edges as you suggest would definitely help that, I think.

And you're welcome. And thank you.

Mail is hard to draw. But yeah, maybe it could be better, but it would be a lot of work

vvvan In reply to shadow07203 [2013-01-06 17:25:35 +0000 UTC]

My point exactly. I see two solutions:
(1) Magical "dragon cloth" armor.
PRO: lighter than mail, subtle as silk, virtually impervious to non-magical stabbing and slashing weapons.
CON: If you run into a mage or sorceress with the right counter-spell...
(2) Leather.
PRO: Cheaper, lighter, always in style. Chicks dig it.
CON: Inferior to mail as armor. You'll never get invited to another Armorers' Guild holiday feast or singles mixer.

Van, your comment is noted and accepted. In fact, check out the Artist's Comments on this page for my thoughts on the matter.

Plus, for anyone else reading Vvvan's comment and my response, please note that I certainly don't mind receiving this kind of criticism. It's helpful, if stated once and clearly, especially with the care Vvvan used and a dash of humor thrown in. That's constructive. Now, if Vvvan called it "ugly" or "stupid," that would have been a bit harder to swallow for me, but still no problem. If Vvvan continued to bring it up, page after chainmail-tainted page of the storyline, claiming continually with alarm that I was ruining my story or my art and so on, it would get much less useful to me and become downright annoying. If the chainmail were a representation of a living being, and "ugly" was used to describe it, that's just rude. I don't want that. I hope we're all clear here.

Thank you, Van, and Shadow07203. I'll take it under advisement.

Personally, I think the level of detail you already build into these images is already superior and far above anything that I've ever seen used for a graphic-novel type project; which is part of the reason it is taking you so long to finish DD. You put so much more quality into the work. I don't think any more is necessary and things like this don't bother me. It hadn't even occurred to me until they mentioned it. Some departures from strict realism have to be tolerated and there's something to be said for suspension of disbelief.

Yes, and my agreement with this viewpoint was why I was willing to post the images with the chainmail as is in the first place. Thank you for sharing that idea. I think the issue here is that the overall images I produce have a certain "average value" of realism, but that the chainmail alone falls a bit short of that so that it stands out. My solution to it was the best I could do without spending an inordinate amount of time on any single image to get the chainmail right. As it is, this pattern still takes enough time that I've about had it with chainmail in general, the same way I'm getting pretty tired of gremlins in the Rats revision work. When I do figure out the chainmail issue, it won't be to push the chainmail all the way forward so that it outstrips the average value of realism for the whole image, but to bring it up to that average value so that it fits.

And now, back on the job, lets see what he does!

A good blooper here would be either if in his sleep some gremlin had either graffitied over his person or there was a post-it note taped to his chain mail with some sort of mundane chore listed....

Oh, that is a brilliant blooper idea! Thank you. And wouldn't it be nice if Luther did at last have another "non-spirit-kitty" chance to swing his sword at something? He's got blood running down his face now, which is a prerequisite for some good "killer determination" imagery...
