***********************************************

Outside the mirror's chamber, Elina finds her path diverges between two open doors and a darkened corridor. Both doorways are lit by a soft glow in whatever chambers lie beyond. She opts first for the left, her mind struggling to map her progress through the labyrinth in which she is still trapped. But as she peers into a large storeroom, the Scholar sighs in relief that she is confronted by neither mischievous Wormloat Gremlin nor brutish undead. Instead, she finds a curious collection of oddities placed in a corner. Some of the items appear to have been haphazardly discarded, while others were obviously carefully arranged. As is her wont, the Scholar concentrates behind the objects themselves, searching for some pattern in their placement. Why these items, and why here?

***********************************************

Astute observers will note the doorway through which Elina is entering is the same one through which Jervil entered to find Annalae trapped in the net at the end of Catcall.

Elina's stock model is Emily at ~Feathered-pics She's given me some fantastic imagery for this sequence and those that follow. If you like what you see, please let her know. Thanks, Emily!

Enjoy!

I always wondered how random shit got strewn about dungeons back when i played D&D.

"Dungeon Dressing" tables from the old Dungeon Master's Guide...

Umm, is it weird to point out that that narration does not match up, like in the least, to the map? To be fair, I've been studying the map intensely due to being at the undercellar in the RP I'm running based on Demon's Due, but still...

Really? I was looking at the map when I wrote this. Where do you see the discrepancy? Please let me know and I'll fix it (the narration). And thanks for the comment.

Alright, unless I'm missing something (and that's very possible) Elina has escaped from the cells indicated on the map in the south of room D, entered room G to the north and east, found the mirror, left about the way she came back through room D, and entered room M via a door to the north.

There's nothing on the map to indicate the darkened corridor, and, unless there's a door to the eastern M room not indicated on the map, she should have had to go through that freaky corpse room first.

So, um, yeah. Not to call you out or anything, I really am enjoying this. But get anything popular enough, there's bound to be nitpickers.

Go ahead and call me out when you think you've spotted a problem. I just took a few minutes and zoomed in on the map I have and added the paths of the three latest focal characters. I think you can see the doors marked a bit more clearly now. The "long corridor" I was describing moves from the "T" from G, O, and M up toward the top of the map.

Well, I'm an idiot. She left through the OTHER damn door. Duh.

It was kind of hard to see in the original map. Don't beat yourself up over it (unless you like the pain, of course...). So, does it work out now with the closeup and the paths drawn in? I'm going to add Valerin's and Deirdre's paths, and probably Callista's as well, and repost the drawing later tonight.

"Abruptly, the stand holding [Valerin's] armor collapsed as if it had never been, and motion above her yanked [the Scholar's] startled gaze upwards where a mesh of darkness fell from the shadows..."

That sounds a bit familiar. Actually, Elina will be looking up in another two pages--I'm on the final pencil stage of the drawing now.

I thought it might. I'm hoping our little gremlin friend will get another opportunity to make sure those lips are silenced and fingers properly secured. I'm all for second chances.

The vision Elina was to have in the mirror will show Valerin in person. I've got it to the ink stage, but I've got to wait for the stock model in question.

Plenty of room against that wall. We're just short the bad guys to put it there.

Oooh, now this is very cool - no clue what the 'thingie' on the right of the picture is... or why that lantern is dangling... but I do like trophy room vibe and I have to agree that Elina's 'stuff' would make a very nice addition!

faile35 In reply to Mad-Gav [2013-01-30 06:29:43 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! That "thingie" on the right hand side is the stand that held Callista's armor and was also rigged as the trigger for the net trap in Catcall (here [link] and here [link] and here [link] ). The lantern is hanging from a hook in the ceiling so that Annalae could light it and read her little invocation to summon the Cat Shade (it's the torn tapestry of runes on the wall here [link] ).

Now lets see.... what can I nick that no one will miss? I mean, if they were trying to avoid theft, they would have put it in the combination lockers just off-screen, right?

Seriously though, I bet she might recognize the significance of a few of those items considering that she knows who all Luther and Drea have sent down in the past and perhaps a little more....

faile35 In reply to White-Feather [2013-01-30 06:33:03 +0000 UTC]

Well, whatever you decide to take, I must say that I'm just itching to see you get ahold of that wand and start leveling this place once and for all. Just make sure that you find the staircase first. And maybe Luther, too...

Then again, maybe leave Luther to his own devices.

But, yes, she does recognize some of what she's seeing, particularly considering what she was studying before coming down here with Luther in the first place, and considering the mini-vision she just had at the mirror. She's a smart one, after all.

"Elina notices two beat-up cardboard boxes, sitting in front of the pile of rick-rack, the first one labelled Keep and the second labelled Salvation Army Truck, written large and in crayon. She can't help but notice that the first is considerably more full than the second..."

Heh heh, Jindar makes a valid point...

faile35 In reply to Mistersneaky [2013-01-30 06:35:38 +0000 UTC]

Maybe the Salvation Army box is empty because Jervil knew he'd already turned the lot of them into Gremlins, so no one would pick up the goods...

Jindar's point, if true of the artistic design, occurred entirely by accident. But, hey, draw anough women and breastplates, and pretty soon they start resembling each other everywhere.

Nice observation! Now that you've pointed that out, I can't NOT see it anymore. Must have been something Freudian going on there in the artist's mind...
