***********************************************

The Scholar doubts that her former captors are among the undead suspended from the ceiling, but she knows she must do something to contain the horror. Back in the corridor Elina noisily pushes the storage room door closed and withdraws her magical key from her robes. She summons forth the charm's power to lock, concentrating to manage the heavy aura of power floating in the air about her, and touches the key against the wooden surface. The image of the unseeing eyes leering at her from their high perch causes the hackles to rise on her neck as she completes the locking spell, and she is uncertain whether she really can hear the shuffling of several feet behind the door above the pounding of her heart and panicked breathing.

***********************************************

Elina's stock model is Emily at ~Feathered-pics She's given me some fantastic imagery for this sequence and those that follow. If you like what you see, please let her know. Thanks, Emily!

Enjoy!

Yeah, there's another door to the room, and a secret passage as well. If she gets the chance, she'll lock them up, too. That's a big "if"...

This feels more like a jump scare than her comeuppance. It may drive her to her reckoning, however. She's making the classic horror movie protagonist mistake. I would personally look around before casting a spell that required all my concentration.

One may argue it's slightly out of character for her to be so unobservant, though. I guess perhaps the ceiling of zombies put her in a bit of a panic.

faile35 In reply to TheeForsakenOne [2013-02-10 16:52:48 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I see your point there. I should probably indicate that she checked in between the last page and this one. She hasn't spent a lot of time traipsing through underground warrens, as it were, and she's very concerned about what's on the other side of the door. I'm thinking that the creature wasn't just sitting there waiting for her, but was in fact moving down the hallway toward her location while she was concentrating on locking the door (for something like 10 seconds, maybe). I'm enjoying these checks on things! Thanks!

Damn zombies just don't know when to quit...

I like the posing of the undead guy/gal (hard to decide, which is part of the fun) in this one, though somehow I don't think she's going to fall to the same mobbing tactic twice if that rigid posture says anything....

Well, she locked the door to the storage room, with herself on the outside of the door. So, technically she's locked out of the storage room, and locked in the hallway with this zombie and the other two.

Reminds me of the critical showdown between Sherlock Holmes and Jim Moriarty at the end of the first season of BBC's Sherlock. If you haven't seen it I won't spoil the surprise further, but let's just say for one of the pair, stayin' alive in the face of such an epic showdown has more than one meaning…!
