Description One of my older ink drawings (15 years old). This one took me about 55 hours, and left me with mixed feelings about the results. "Castle Rock," is a popular locale name--I think Stephen King wrote at least one book about a place with that name (never read any of them), and the Western U.S. has something so-named in each state I've visited. I envision this place to have been partly carved from the rock, and partly built upon/above it, which gives it its name.

Enjoy! --Faile35

No, no. I drew this about 15 years before I posted it here on DA, which was over five years ago. That means I drew it about 20 years ago, when I was the ripe old age of 24... Thanks!

no need to have mixed feelings of it, this is amazing! I especially love the stones on the mountain. sure the clouds are inconsistant, but whenever are they consistant in real life? I know if you take too long on a project you will definately have doubts, no matter how awesome your project is, but sometimes its best to either dispel them or use them to your advantage in your next project!

Well, it's completely out of my head--I constructed a diagram and map of the interior while I was drawing this so I knew exactly what I had in mind. Didn't look at anything else to do it, either. But I am quite pleased that you feel that way. Thank you.

Thank you kindly! There are some really good inkers out there, and some right here on DeviantART, too. I have a few in my favorites that you could browse through. It is the deep darkness of the medium that attracted me, and I have sought to use it as much as possible. --Faile35

I like this. though the the lines are a bit too much for me. I like shading bij using stripes, but yours go in too many directions for me: horizontal an vertical as well as diagonal. It makes it look a bit crowded. This picture on the other hand, does have some great atmosphere.

No problem. I was actually in my early 20s at the time. While I was definitely very capable as an artist in my teenage years, I didn't start to work seriously with ink until 15 years ago--the same few months that I did this and many of my other pen-and-ink drawings I've got posted here.

Thank you for your praise of it. --Faile35

Wow! You drew this at 15!?! Thats insane man. I sure dont know any 15 year olds that draw like that lol. You did a beautiful job! I love the rock formation too. It looks like the castle grew out of it.

extremendousness [2006-07-20 00:11:54 +0000 UTC]

i love the hills and castle..i'm not sure about the clouds and sky..it seems the clouds don't match the shading style that the ground does... i couold see a bunch of bats and a vampire or two flying out of this majestic castle at night..or maybe an angry crowd of villagers at it's gait or something i just watched the old Frankenstein movie, can you tell?
the funny thing is, i think this drawing looks good in any light. well, what i mean is, no matter how dark or how light i turn my screen monitor thing on it always looks good. it's just that a lot of people's stuff looks like crap in a different light then what it was intended it to be. of course, i'm sure the black and white thing has something to do with it, but still. or maybe it's just me
anywho, nice job

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

faile35 In reply to extremendousness [2006-07-20 00:24:14 +0000 UTC]

Wow. I'll have to experiment a bit on my own to test your theory. Thanks for the praise! It does have a Frankenstein-ish feel to it--the villagers just haven't gathered together with their pitchforks and torches yet... The clouds and sky trouble me a bit, too--I think I said that in the remarks above, or in a comment somewhere on this page... --Faile35

Very Draculous. Very me. The only bit I don't like is the line around the sun, which looks unnatural. Best thing to do might be to darken the sky and make it a moon.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

faile35 In reply to dashinvaine [2006-07-19 22:07:10 +0000 UTC]

I agree with your assessment of the sun. I honestly didn't have the know-how (skills, plan, or whatnot) to do the sky the way I think it should be done now. Thus, a circle. At least there is some artistic device to tell you where it is, and how big it is, which I knew was important to the composition of the thing. In any case, I'm glad you can find something in it to appreciate. --Faile35
