Description This is a Story about me This is a picture of me when I was around 6 years old(40 years ago) wearing clothes borrowed from the preachers daughter. This is the morning after our house caught fire and burned to the ground. We were at church across the street from our small town home. Our neighbor ran into the church and yelled "Maxine" (my mother) Your house is on FIRE!!! My mother who was playing the piano jumped up and ran knocking everyone down, proceeded to run into the burning house (all wood). Now you ask me why would anyone run into a burning how My mother is an animal lover, we had animals of all kinds. It so happens at this time we had a couple of baby pigs on the back porch, because there mother had gotten into a pond and wound up freezing to death as it was middle of winter. My dad brought the babies home for my mother to take care of them. Okay back to the story. My mother ran into this burning house to save these pigs. By this time the fire department shows up from the town next to ours. It took them 20 minutes to get there, by this time the house is a full blaze. Everyone in our small town was now surrounding us and watching it burn. The firemen went into the house to get my mother, who by this time was already outside again. She couldn't find the pigs but as everything was pretty much already destroyed, the fireman finally saved a couple of our precious possessions. These brave men saved my mothers piano, a sewing machine and a dinner tray with a unfinished meal They thought the dinner tray was funny (we did too). They really couldn't save anything else as the fire was so hot and everything being made of wood it burned pretty fast. Now this being said all my childhood went up in smoke. As for the baby pigs, it seems they escaped with no harm done except for the one I am holding it had a burn on his nose. They put a band-aid on it and I was carrying it around, the local newspaper happened to show up for a story and a took this picture and ran it in local newspaper. I have to say that this fire has affected my whole life, I save everything now. I always make sure I have multiple copies of all my pictures and very careful with them. One nice thing that came out of this fire, we learned how much we meant to our small town (500 people) the whole county came together and gave up a party and supplied us with everything we needed to begin again. I am talking tons of stuff. It is a nice feeling knowing that your neighbors loved us as we loved them. They really dont have that now days. We haved lived in the same house for 17 years and still barely know our neighbors, so sad Oh well, I came across this photo and it just brought back my memories and thought I would share. Thanks if you actually took the time to read my story

Wow! That's both terrible and wonderful. I mean losing anything must be truly frightening but on the other hand the love and careing gives a very warm feeling (don't know how to say this, but hope you understand.) I'm glad your mother and the pigs survived. By the way you look adorable on this picture.:

What a beautiful story of inspiration and good will. What a wonderful thing that the town came to aid your family. The picture is also adorable and evokative of a sense of yesteryear and like the pheonix that rose from the ashes you rose up again.

yes, I was such a cutie as a young girl and our neighbors were awesome. I can remember getting all kinds of new toys they basically gave us everything we needed to start over besides a house which we wound up getting one right next to my grandmothers so I grew up being able to spend most of my time with her

ahh I have some Choctaw cousins from Oklahome and TN. My Fathers family are from the Pine Ridge South Dakota reservation Lakota Oglala Sioux Nation

FairieGoodMother In reply to MistRaven [2010-01-18 21:18:25 +0000 UTC]

Then your cousins have it made. In Oklahoma the Indians are well taken care of. Free school, college, free sr rings, pictures, free health and dental insurance, also they get a free house are almost free. They even get free sports equipment and money for school clothes. That is if they have there scroll numbers which my family doesn't. It sucked. My great grandfather refused to get one and now it is to late.

MistRaven In reply to FairieGoodMother [2010-01-18 22:24:08 +0000 UTC]

yea I know and I know all too well about the scroll my Father hated that he was a Native and walked away from them before I was born. He joined the military and wrote white as race then when he married my Mom she asked his nationality and he said all american. If not for his side of the family I would not of known all I do about the tribe. He made my Mom put me as white when I was born as well.
Soooo I am not on scroll because of him.

FairieGoodMother In reply to MistRaven [2010-01-19 05:19:34 +0000 UTC]

it really is a shame. The Choctaw Tribe is extremely rich in Oklahoma as they have all the casinos. They actually built one outside of the small town I am from. It is sad when I go down, because I go there to play at night because I am such a night owl and everyone in my family down there goes to bed extremely early I always see people that really cant afford to be gambling in there for hours and I wonder how they do it as I know they are on public assistance. But then again a lot of them have gotten there house from the Indian department.

Yea I know its a very sad situation like the ones u seen who u know are not able to afford it. They sit and play and play in hopes of hitting it big to escape their personal hell most likely playing with their food money or something.
Very sad. Most Indian reservations are so poor with ghetto conditions and the alcohol and drug abuse its just so sad to me
