I've been reading other's opinions on the topic of "original species" and it makes me more and more on edge about my own work. I don't sell my adopts for high prices but I don't want my creations to be clique, bland, or just not creative...

this is perfect ^^^Β
i don't mind if people make a species like that, or even sell adopts of them for hundreds of dollars- (i have to question who would spend that much, but i'm not judging)Β
everyone has to make a living, it's understandable.
but when you say people can't use that idea because you came up with it, that's just stupidΒ
scuse u but a dog with a fruity butt is a dog with a fruity butt, not some amazing unique idea that's never been done before. how do you forbid everyone ever from making dogs with fruity butts?? (not a hit at any specific species here, just any of those generic "___" cats/dogs/ponies that are just cats/dogs/ponies with a butt thing or some other minor difference)
that's why i like the tailmouth species. you can do whatever you want with them, because the creator knew it was lame to restrict people on such a vague idea of a species. i feel like a lot of these species with weird tails were inspired by tailmouths too.Β
a closed species with creative designs and deep lore is definitely something i can understand wanting to keep to yourself. but a dog with something stuck to its' butt? that's just a dog. you can't forbid people from drawing dogs you goof.Β
thanks for making this manΒ

You know, most of these people are making a living off this stuff and are doing what every artist dreams to do, why can`t you just be happy for their success?
Also the picture thing, I`m sure they saw your art, but if they commented on yours, others would expect comments, and all those comments add up. People don`t have the time to talk to everyone.

fairypaws In reply to Tinytlger [2015-05-05 22:40:52 +0000 UTC]
what...im talking about artists who yell and are mean to others because their "CLOSED" species are literally just already existing animals with say, a freaking cup as its tail..like thats fucking ridiculous it isnt a closed species??
and the thing is they commented on lots of other people's gifts, so why not mine? just a "thank you" feels better than no comment or even a FAVORITE ffs..favoriting stuff takes like a millisecond.

I know, but you also said you were jealous, I`m not berating you for it, you should just be happy for them.
And maybe they commented before they were popular, before people started spamming them with notes and comments and tags and everything else.
I`m not mad at you, I just don`t like it when others are unhappy that people make money off of what they love, no offense to you.

yeah im happy for their success, but really disappointed that they are just really rude to people who use the same idea, whenever it wasnt original in the first place..
and no they didnt :"( but its okay, because i dont even look up to them anymore and nor do i care ;-;
and its ok :_)

It`s alright to be upset, but some people truly believe their designs are worth it, original or otherwise.

Eh, I'm okay with making closed species (I just made one), because then it feels like a community, but I would never freak out at someone for having a similar idea, since, yeah, a water dog or a pancake cat or whatever is pretty standard. imo nothing on dA is TRULY "unique"; everyone is inspired by all sorts of things they see, and so many people have drawn so many things over the entire existence of the human species, that I find it unlikely that anyone has ever made anything new. But some are certainly more common than others. x)
Adoptables in general piss me off when it comes to popular artists. Nobody should be able to charge $50+ for a girl in a dress. People buy because the art is pretty, as though buying the character will also buy their art skills. Honestly, I unwatch any deviant that sells their "designs" for exorbitant prices.
Same "originality" idea with OCs, imo. For example, the character in my icon: pink curly pigtails, Sweet Lolita, candy-themed - all common themes. I would only confront someone about "copying" if their character was like 95% the same, and even then I would look for other evidence first.
Idk, people get very possessive of their ideas here.

Tinytlger In reply to Sugary-Stardust [2015-05-05 22:40:39 +0000 UTC]
It`s because some people actually put thought and hard work into their designs, and to them, that`s worth what they charge. Sure, some may not be that special or original to you, but to the people who actually try (not the people who throw stuff on something and sell it), it could possible mean the world to them.
And please don`t confuse "unoriginal" with "simple". Yes, water dogs, sushi dogs and nekoi are all very easy to think of. But they are simple ideas, not unoriginal ones. If it was so unoriginal, why didn`t you think of it?

i understand, but it is the buyers that go crazy though....but sometimes i look at a closed species auction with the species being really simple with simple clothes that prices are like $50....and im just like whatta heck?! Sure some species are cute, but dont go overboard jeesh.
anyways, just gonna advertise my OPEN-species here~ if anyone wants to make some~

TheLyingLark [2015-01-02 23:19:51 +0000 UTC]
there really is no reason to try to stick a flower on a cat and call it an original species I guess
I don't think people should pump the price on an adopt because 'it's my original species' that actually isn't really well thought about at all
If they don't have a nice original species just focus on trying to make a nice design and sell that is what I say
It is weird how people get popular
Depending on how popular the person is, they really could get hundreds of messages a day that they have to sift through themselves and things can really get lost if they aren't online every day and even then they could just have forgotten
As the person on the other side like you, it's soooo super frustrating sometimes
Soooooo super frustrating haha
I would probably be in a rage myself for drawing the character, not getting a response, and then a bit later they sell the character away after I just drew them
Maybe the current owner will love on them
And I'm sorry that this happened
