Description
This is another request for a fan fiction character illustration--again, from another forum. Jedi Knight Kaie Neria was described as having "straight brown shoulder-length hair and hazel eyes; 5'6", slim and not too muscular, but she can hold her own in a fight--she's 22 years old." Her personality (something I like to have when illustrating a character) was described as "extremely sarcastic at times, harsh and serious, but once she gets to know a person well, she'll start to come out of her shell a little."Referenced a magazine ad for the pose and face--the costuming is original.
Graphite pencils (2H, HB, 2B, 3B--mechanical and classic), blending stumps and plain paper Kleenex--on heavy-weight fine-tooth drawing paper.

Thank you! This was a fan fiction character, described to me by the author in great detail (re: the clothing, her hair and look); "proud and strong" were two of the characteristics he gave, so it's great that comes across! Thanks again for the comments, and for the added

Ooo! Very nice FF! Definately could see the sarcastic aspect of her personality coming through and the stance does solidify her harshness - like she won't put up with any funny business from anyone.
Lot's of great shading. I really like how you handle Jedi robes; always with a little extra detail to it in the material so it doesn't looks so plain. Not to mention that you always do well with coming up with original costuming on all the characters you tackle. The misty BG is a nice touch and you made sure that she didn't blend into it by mistake. Great work.

I love the pose and her expression, shows off that slight sarcastic bent to her as discribed in your words about her. I also really like how you have done the background, it's somewhat smokey and mysterious. Really nice shading on the figure as always

I'm curious as to how you chose the length and design of the lightsaber.

I don't usually give it much thought, to tell the truth--I guess I try to imagine the character taking a two-handed grip and then adjust things from there (...this one may be a touch "short" by that measure...). As to design--it's usually dictated by the requester (in this case, the author didn't even visualize her with a lightsaber, but I thought a Jedi should at least have one on her somewhere...)--when I "invent" them, I usually borrow from existing designs, mixing and matching. One usually can't go wrong with a slender cylinder and some generic kind of emitter assembly!

I was wondering because it looked like it would barely fit into her hand. If you do any research into Japanese swords, you'll notice that swords made for combat would have a handle that is as long as the users hand and forearm combined. However, once peace was established under the Tokugawa era, handles became shorter.

Thank you again for the critique--and I was watching ESB again the other night: Luke's lightsaber is at least as long as his forearm, so my error is obvious. I very much appreciate the information, and will try to incorporate it into future work (...since all I draw is SW, lol!

Well, that is just the japanese aspect of it. The Count use more of a refined fencing technique, so his was not so long ... however, it would be unwise to take an epee into a fight with a two handed claymore!

I really like that. If I had longer hair It would be me, down to the personality...except i'm probably a little more shy and reserved..but otherwise, hair eyes height, age and the personality is all there. creepy.

Luckily, I'm pregnant right now so I dont look exactly like the character...and of course my hair is shorter, but aside from all that..yeah, pretty crazy. if i ever decide to grow my hair out i'll seriously think about finding a costume. lol.
