(A note regarding the image: the hints of dark purple visible along some of the darker portions of feathers are NOT unnatural - if you look at the wings of ravens, crows, and other dark-colored birds, they tend to glint green, indigo, or purple in the sunlight. That's what's going on here. Sorry if my crappy never-drawn-griffons-before art skills didn't convey that. )

Personality::
Zephyr is first and foremost concerned with justice. She strives to remain unbiased in any conflict, and if one side seems to be underrepresented she will most likely defend them simply for the sake of fairness. She also has a strong sense of duty and loyalty to her flock.

Prior to her younger sister’s death, Zephyr was very cheerful, open-minded, and carefree, once described as “radiant” by a kindly old Omega. But after her sister, her best friend, was killed in a rockslide when they were both Youngbloods, Zephyr seemed to “shut down,” becoming unemotional and reserved to avoid further heartache. She also developed her extreme sense of justice at this time, after reflecting upon how unfair it was that her sister had to die so young. Nowadays she rarely smiles widely or expresses any sort of extreme emotion, although she can become quite passionate while debating or fighting, sometimes excessively so. (To clarify: she is not “scarred for life;” she is perfectly capable of functioning in normal society without dramatically bursting into tears or becoming tragically emo. The shock simply changed her emotional outlook on life and made her rethink her priorities.)

In normal life she is reserved, but still outspoken when maintaining justice or defending herself. She tends to speak formally and often sarcastically.

Zephyr frequently places herself “outside” normal social happenings, preferring to watch and observe rather than throw herself into the thick of things. She is intelligent and strategic and tends to be intuitive as well, seeing through whatever emotional disguises others put up to the truth beneath. This skill can prove unnerving when coupled with Zephyr’s intensity and often no-nonsense way of speaking.

The only time she is willing and happy to get involved is when she is acting as a sort of counselor or advisor to others. She is extremely loyal to her friends (sometimes even when she shouldn’t be) and is eager to use her knowledge to assist them. She is able to remain detached from the problem herself, retaining her own identity, while still being empathetic and helpful.

Zephyr’s new way of life leaves no room in her heart for love, but there is still enough of her “old self” buried underneath the hard exterior to breed those sorts of feelings. If, however, they were to crop up, she would keep them completely out of sight and do her utmost not to let anyone else know, most likely denying them herself. If approached by someone in a romantic way she would most likely ignore them, employing sarcasm if conversation was absolutely necessary. Beneath her shell she is actually a bit of a hopeless romantic and rather sensitive, but she would rather die than admit it. The one time she allows herself to be completely carefree and joyful like she used to be is while flying alone, which is what she tends to do whenever she is stressed or upset.

Zephyr grew up playing with her lively and adventurous sister, Calliope, talking boldly to all the members of the flock, and looking up to her mother and father. They both died of natural causes shortly before she and Calliope became Youngbloods, but as they were both old when the fledglings were born it was a peaceful passing and the two sisters were able to accept it fairly easily. Zephyr was determined to become a Shadow after her father, while Calliope took after their mother and aspired to be a Ward. Despite the differences in training, Zephyr and Calliope remained the best of friends and shared a meal together every evening. One day, however, near the end of their Youngblood training, Calliope was out on a patrol with her mentor when a freak rockslide slid down the mountains and crushed her to death. Zephyr was not present at the time and only learned about the accident hours later when Calliope’s mentor returned to camp with the news. Zephyr was heartbroken and raced from the camp without saying a word, spending the night flying all over the mountains calling for her sister. Eventually she accepted the reality and returned to camp, but from that time on she was never really the same again. She devoted herself with a new ferocity to her duty and became more reserved and formal, not allowing herself to become too attached to anyone or anything else. Within a couple weeks she was officially promoted to the rank of Shadow, and on that day she smiled for the first time since her sister’s death, and has since lightened up somewhat. Since then she has spent her time working hard for her flock and quietly advising others, but sometimes she still finds the need to get away and simply soar above the mountains on her own.

The golden afternoon air was warm and exhilarating as it sifted through the feathers of Zephyr’s outstretched wings, brushing away the thought of the problems waiting for her on the ground. The griffon banked sharply in the sky with eyes closed, enjoying the blissful sensation of weightlessness, doing her best to savor the moment. The dreamy illusion did not last long, however. A voice echoed from below, slamming her back to reality. Why can’t they just leave me up here in peace for a bit? she thought wistfully. Then with a mental sigh she snapped her eyes open. Oh, well. Time to get back to it, I guess. “I’m coming!” she called. And without further delay, she dove.

/ -Amaryllis- : She might have been the clumsiest and silliest Ward anyone ever saw, but my mom was incredibly kind and brave. It was sad that she had to go when she did, right before Cal and I became Youngbloods, but she was old, and dad had already passed. It was just her time, I suppose.

/ -Valerian- : He was the reason I wanted to be a Shadow so badly all throughout my fledglinghood. I loved how he could command attention with just one quiet sentence and a glance from those silvery eyes of his. He treated mom and Cal and me so well, though. He was a great dad.

-Dalek- : She’s a wise and capable leader, and I hold her in high respect. If anyone is my role model, it’s probably her.

/ -Soren- : As a fellow Shadow I’m kind of obligated to spend time with him, but his cockiness gets on my nerves. Also he should really stop trying to flirt with me or I might have to hurt him. Still, he’s nice enough and pretty funny at times. I enjoy beating him in arguments.

/ -Flint- : Creator, this kid. I swear. He’ll grow up just fine one day, I’m sure, but at the moment he’s a pain in the beak.

/ -Aya- : She's just so nice all the time, I couldn't help but like her. We're not super-close, but she's definitely good company. I wish she would respect authority a bit more, though. Our leaders deserve it.

/ -Saekrae- : We're quite similar in everything from our morals to our feather coloring. I suspect he would have been a great Shadow, but he seems to really enjoy his work as a Ward, and I certainly sleep easier knowing he's on guard.
