The list I got of possible costumes for Zintiel this round was:*Nintendo's Luigi
*A magic user from any video game
*A gijinka/costume of a fruit or vegetable
I'm not big on fan stuff to begin with, and Zintiel (this version) being from not-Earth -and- from the future limits what she would be familiar with. That leaves fruits and vegetables. I still hate that word, "gijinka"... why not just say anthropomorphic like normal people?
But anyway! At first I considered... what fruit/vegetable is purple, so Zintiel's hair wouldn't be out of place? The answer, eggplant. Which led me to think of... Eggplant Wizard, a magic-user from Nintendo's Kid Icarus video game... ... 2.5 out of the 3 costume prompts! That tickled my fancy, but because of the reasons above, I wasn't sure I wanted to go with that.
Eventually, I thought of dragon fruit. That is one badass, spiky fruit. And the result is what you see here.
Any reference to a video game in this final picture is purely coincidental.

I desperately feared getting stuck with fan-stuff as well. The people suggesting those things, doesn't seem to consider that this is a *character* competition, and the extremely limited fan-suggestions they make may not be anything near what the character that receives it likes.Β
I was rather lucky on that front. I think I got some of the staff-created suggestions, so no fandoms.Β

After all this, I now kind of feel guilty for putting "superhero" and "Scooby-Doo character" in the list I submitted XD
Though at least they aren't incredibly specific.... but I can see how someone might not be inspired by those!
(the truth is that at the time I thought Zintiel as Power Girl and Sage as Velma would be awesome... oh myyyy)

Actually, I think superhero is a genre in itself by now. No worse than "princess" or "vampire". As long as you don't mention a specific hero, people can even make up their own.
I think most people can forgive one fan-character on a list, though. It's the ones that are two or three very specific fan-characters that I really wouldn't like to receive.

I hate the word gijinka as well. I get that it stems from the popularity of anime and the need to say "kawaii" instead of "cute" but it doesn't make it any less stupid.

I don't mind people speaking in japanese using japanese words (obviously), but if there's a perfectly valid word already in the language you're using... whyyyy?
(I am also annoyed by french characters in movies speaking perfect (accented) english but using a random french word here and there... NOBODY does that in real life)
