First, make a sketch. A rough sketch; it doesn't have to be beautiful or outlined or anything of that nature. Then, create a new layer and set that layer to "multiply". Lay a series of colors that would be on that object on the sketch itself. Always, always work from the farthest point (the sky) to the closest point (the yellow leaves). You will lay character sketches over the image itself; I usually have the pictures invisible unless I want to check back and see how everything is doing (you can do that by clicking the eye on the left hand of the layer. Look for it). When I'm finishing putting a base color of all the colors I want in a certain object (look at the mountain for a second, it's not just flat purple! It's purples, greys, and etc, strategically placed to fit that of shadows, crevices and etc). Delete the sketch layer. Start painting; drop all your knowledge of coloring because you're going to paint, not carefully cell shade or shade a character. Just slowly begin to build your shadows, colors and lights. You can't lose!
