Was your grandfather a professional photographer during the war or do you know if he purchased this photo from a photographer during the war?  I know most military service men did not have the ability to take personal photographs and interestingly enough, my father has this same photo in his collection...perhaps they were there at the same time??  Any info you can share would be greatly appreciated!

He said that he took the photo himself and I believed him.  I'm not sure if they were there at the same time or not.  What division was he in?

Hi there, I'm a University student and have been asked to look into a photograph of my choosing from around the 1950's and do a presentation on it. I was wondering if you would mind me using this one and if you had any other information about the photograph that you could offer me? Like for example, was this taken by your grandfather? Does he remember anything specific about that crossing? Why it was taken? Even a bit of background on him would be great, if you don't mind. I completely understand if you don't want me to use this photo however, just thought I should ask. Regards.

I know that it was in fact taken by my grandfather. Wish that I could ask him your questions but unfortunately he passed away a few years ago due to complications from renal failure. Thank you for your interest though and feel free to use any of the photos from this series for your report.
