While warming up for some sketching earlier this week, I painted a 5-10 minute speedpaint of the sun breaking over the horizon during winter. A little bit of warmth penetrating the cold. (the painting is in my scraps if you care to see) I liked how it came out, as did others, and I promised myself I'd do a full painting with the concept.This is what I came out with.
The colors are different, and there's also snow now, but I feel they're both worthy adjustments, especially the snow. I really love the feel it gave the painting.As for meaning, there is no correct one. I'm sure this (as well as anything) will have a different meaning for everyone. So interpret it as how you see fit.

This actually isn't my character, but there is resemblance in the eyes so I can see why you'd mistake him for this guy.

Oh my, this looks so realistic that i can almost feel frost bites and hear the howls of the northern wind. Details like the tiny ice crystals on his fur, shining on faint morning light or the flakes changing direction as they've been deflected against him are amazing! Lighting is excellent and it gives another level to reality... Great job

It's nice to see you were willing to have the character so dark as it is, after putting so much work into the details. That works so well, because he would be dark in this scene. I'm afraid if I drew this, I would lighten him up too much, just to show off the details, and then ruin the mood of the piece.

I can feel the cold wind biting, and those flakes collecting on the fur... definitely one of the best representations of weather I've seen in a looong time!

I really like the work you've put into this~ The lighting is wonderful, the atmosphere is beautiful, and the expression is full of raw emotion~
The only thing I can complain about, I think, may be the muzzle. The angle seems to be parallel to the horizon while the head, in general, seems to be angled towards the bottom-left corner of the picture. But overall, I think the picture is a big bottle of ~!

The fog-like appearance with the ground gives me a 'Max Payne' impression - mysterious and cold (...yeah, a lot of games can give you that sort of idea (well, for me anyhow lol))

it makes me like want more, if you know what i mean. Like its a scene from a movie where he is trying to find somebody who he isnt sure if they are still alive or not.
the other thing that i like about this is that its a sunrise instead of a sunset or mid day, because thats when most other winter scenes are set. This one seems to make the image colder because its just coming out of night and the sun isnt even visible yet, so he probably stayed up all night.
Sorry if I'm reading this too much, but thats just how it makes me think ^_^

Hmmmm.... To me, it seem's like they've (kinda unsure on the gender XP ) been walking all night through the blizzard, they're about to collapse from exaustion, and this is te instant before they fully comprehend the sunrise. I don't know, that's how I read it. I calls 'em hows I sees 'em.

I use male characters in most of my personal work because I find them more fun to draw and I also lack knowledge on female anatomy. I've been practicing though.

wow, this is amazing!
and from an artist's perspective... where his eyes are looking... it makes me want to follow his gaze. then i follow the horizon back to his eyes and start over again. i guess i'm following the movement of the painting. that's good! you have one of the principals of art and design in your painting! ^^ i'm sure you have more than THAT of course, but this IS an amazing work of art. keep it up ^^
