Roofwalker
I can hear it outside the window. I know I can. It paces back and forth just outside my line of sight. I could easily stand from my bed and move to see it, whichever form it's taken, but fear binds me tight. I feel that if I move it will know. It will know and it will hear my thoughts. It will come for me. I can't make my tangible thoughts go farther than that.
The pacing above has stopped. It's been like this for two nights, tonight is the third. I don't know what it wants. Has it come for me or someone else in the house? What have we done to bring it here?
The other nights were much like tonight: it paces for hours before jumping to the roof. I can hear its thudding footfalls above me now. If it sees me it can witch me and it can't give corpse poison unless it's inside, though it could always put bone dust down the chimney to give us corpse poison. But how hard can it be for something like that to get past locked doors or break a window? If it really wanted to get in it would have come as something bigger, something with heavier footsteps. It would have already witched us if it meant to. I think that over and over again to reassure myself.
Maybe it's not a witch? There's a possibility that it's just a coyote or a wolf. A wolf on the roof is unlikely, but still possible. I know that's what I want to be the truth. I try to think logically, but can't help thinking of the possibilities. What if it is a Skinwalker? What if it curses me, kills me?
Skinwalkers, the yenaaldlooshii, are those who break the taboos. They create chaos and twist around all of our rituals and traditions. And those silly white people think the Skinwalkers are 'were-wolves'. Were-wolves are from their society, not ours. We may have to call a medicine man for a sing; it's the only way to get rid of the evil that the yenaaldlooshii bring.
