Description My amazing plush doll of Ninten (from EarthBound: Zero aka EarthBound Beginnings aka Mother)!
I'm so proud of him.

Man, I don't even know where to start...
The doll is about 3 and a half feet tall.
He has articulated joints in the elbows, shoulders, wrists, hips, and knees.
His face was hand-embroidered.
His clothing is interchangeable for things like cleaning and updating (but has permanent underwear for obvious reasons).
His skin is cotton jersey cloth.
His hair is hiperlon fiber, part is technically a wig that I cut up.
The doll has no armature, so he's totally soft and floppy (like a kitty!).
When squeezed, he sings an eight-bit version of "The Eight Melodies" (I'm totally serious, he does!).

I started him in December 2012, and finished him in May 2013 (six months? He was three months premature! ). I completed him on the day of Mother's Day, coincidentally (well, everything but his hat, which was finished a few days later).
Note that his skin is ridiculously pale. I (honest to Queen Mary) searched for months for the right fabric. After several failed other fabrics, I finally said "balls to this!" and just used this ivory colored fabric. I've never dyed fabric before, so I was too nervous to try it. Next time, I might have to try dyeing it.
It took me an entire month just to do the hair.
His shirt was made by taking an ordinary, white cotton shirt and cutting it in half. I shortened the shoulder area and painted the stripes on with "Simply Screen" brand screen-printing paint. This paint can be found at places like Hobby Lobby (you can just paint it on like normal and then dry-iron it to make it permanent).
I obtained the wig and wefts to make his hair from Arda-Wigs dot com. The name of the wig I ordered is called the "Derek".

So much effort went into making this doll. Everything went so well (aside from some errors and problems with the fabric, like tearing seams that eventually mutated his shape and have left him hideously disfigured, but only I can tell how he's disfigured because only I know how I intended him to look).
I did so much research. If there's one thing I can suggest or down-right preach: Do research before diving into a project, especially big ones like large-scale dolls and fursuits if you're an amateur like I am. I've seen so many honestly awful costumes and dolls because the novice artist didn't do enough research before attempting their project. Dude, I went directly from making these puny things: feathery-wings.deviantart.com/… , directly to making big dolls like this by doing the necessary research and planning.

I didn't want just some tiny, stiff, felt doll with fabric hair. I said to myself, "No, I want to be able to run my fingers through his hair! I want his arms and legs to be movable! I want to be able to swop his red, white, and blue striped shirt for his canon blue and yellow striped shirt! I want him to sing! I want the most accurate, most awesome Ninten doll in history!"
And, that's exactly what I made. And, I'm so happy.

The doll is so cute, it fills me with so much pride and joy.

Also, yeah, the doll is pretty embarrassing for me. He's just so big and elaborate; I admit it's incredibly weird to have put this much effort into a doll of a fictional twelve-year-old boy.
In fact, I think the doll is a bit creepy. It honestly gave me nightmares for the first few days it was complete.
Now, I just have nightmares of the doll getting damaged or stolen!

Uwwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa~~~~ Β

Oh man, I've secretly dreamed of making a doll this size (as much as I love Ninten, it'd probably be Lucas)... any suggestions on where to start (patterns, advice, etc.)? I'm fairly good at sewing, but all my current dolls are just 12 inches...

Finally, can you reinstate the video somehow? I'd just love to hear him sing~ Β

Gosh, I've actually had quite a few requests to bring the video back. Maybe I will!

Before making the doll (aside from what I learned from my experience making a fursuit), I studied this doll: doku.bimyo.jp/scd2/ . I found her interesting because of her seamless joints. There are links to tutorials on the right side of the site. I utilized a few methods I learned from that site to make Ninten, and later Ness. The website is translated from Japanese though, so the sentence structure can be kinda clunky.

Thanks so much! I think I'll be able to learn a lot from this too! As for the sentence structure, I don't really mind - I've studied Japanese for a few years now, so I'm used to running into that.

When I finished Mother, I really considered trying to make a music box doll of Ninten, but I settled for just a regular one. Knowing that yours can sing on top of everything else just makes me so happy!

I don't do crocheting, but I do plan on making a smaller version of the same kind of doll which will be easier to produce and less expensive if I were to sell it. Hopefully I can produce a smaller version soon, so keep an eye out.
