Personality:

Maxwell has a mothering streak a mile wide, with an almost compulsive need to do things like clean and organize messes, straighten ties and collars, fetch people breakfast and nag them to eat healthy, et cetera. Likes being helpful and fussing over people. He is not actually OCD (he thinks)--the mothering and fussing is a habit that stems from a childhood spent with just his dad and no lady in the house. His dad is a good man and tries to be a good father, but he also happens to be a busy, absent-minded, and horrifically messy man. To keep their house from being engulfed trash-of-the-titans style, Max took up a good portion of the housework. This gradually extended to other chores. (End result: Max would probably make a good house husband: he cooks and cleans and knows how to mend clothes.)

He is fastidious and meticulous with his own work; tact restrains him from commenting on other people’s work. (Though that doesn’t stop him from agonizing over it quietly. Ever since his sister pointed it out to him, he tries to keep in mind that not everyone likes a fussy busybody up in their business, buuuuut....)

He likes to tease people, but whether he’s good at it or not is up in the air. He also has a tendency to refer to people by nicknames and use affectionate terms, whether he knows them well or not. He is stubbornly cheerful at times, and when not in full-blown mothering mode, can seem relatively quiet and mild-mannered.

He can be a bit of a coward, in a way--he tries to avoid both conflict and having to face his own problems, passive and deferential to other people as long as he thinks it’s about him and no one else. He is also claustrophobic, though hell if he knows why.

History:

He was born to a couple in New Bark Town, though his parents split up while he was too young to clearly remember it. His mom and fraternal twin sister stayed there, while his dad took him and moved to Celadon City. The two halves of the family remained in contact over the years, partly for the kid’s sakes (though, it wasn't like their parents really hated each other, after). Maxwell finally met his sister in person when they turned twelve--by that time, she’d become a Pokemon trainer and had been on the road for about a year. She surprised them with a visit out of the blue, and ended up staying with Max and their dad for a couple weeks. The siblings bonded pretty tightly in this time--they’d gotten along well enough, but were not particularly close before then. She gave him a Growlithe shortly before she left, as a belated birthday present, and though the Growlithe...really didn’t like him, he loved it.

(She is eternally embarrassed by the fact that her first big gift to him ended up trying to set him on fire a few times. He took it in stride after the first time and didn’t blame her, though he teases her about it from time to time.)

She inspired him to become a trainer himself--a combination of that first visit, her well-meaning but troublesome gift, and her happiness at being a trainer. He went on trips to other cities and regions during breaks and such, but didn’t really start traveling full-time until he completed high school, despite his dad’s encouragement. (Sidenote: he still calls his dad every day. Worrywart.) In the two years since then, he’s managed to get the rest of the Kanto badges (he collected some before then out of sheer necessity) and has visited Hoenn and Sinnoh. He’s also run into his sister on the road a handful of times; they tend to rib each other when together.

His interest in Ohana is mostly curiosity--it’s the first big tournament-thing he’s tried out for, and he’s never been to Ohana before. Also, a certain friend of his may or may not have insinuated that he would get his behind kicked six ways to Sunday, which he’s fairly sure is inaccurate, but anyway. Anyway.

Bec is prickly and proud, staunchly loyal, and can be something of a jerkass with a heart of gold. Disdained his trainer at first, but--okay, he still kinda thinks he’s an idiot, but Max is Bec’s idiot, you know? Has a possessive streak and is easily jealous. Has all the delicacy and subtlety of a boot to the head.

(During his middle school years, as various classmates will note, he developed something of a twitch and was jumpy for months). Though she did her best to bug him and push all his buttons, they ended up growing on each other like an itchy fungus. Max still isn’t quite sure what her problem was. (In truth, she just found his reactions hilarious.)

However, the trainer never turned up, and Simon ended up quietly adopted into the family. A bastion of calm and sanity for which Max is eternally grateful.

Always manages to be underfoot, somehow--Max has lost count of the times he has tripped or almost stepped on him. On the up-side, Trip doesn’t seem to hold it against him. On the down side, Max will always be a little paranoid when carrying Trip in his party, checking and double checking that the furret isn’t out of his Pokeball when he goes anywhere.

Unfortunately for her, they also don’t usually trust her word, seeing her in a way similar to the boy who cried wolf. Max isn’t quite sure how the shy, sweet little Skitty he caught turned out like this, but he dotes on her just as he does his other Pokemon. (Sidenote: she makes him feel old, sometimes. Is this what having daughters is like.) Tsundere for Bec, but god help you if you tease her about that. Girl slaps pretty hard.
