Description The "unofficial" name of the new QBZ-191 comes from the Chinese "Qīngwǔqì Bùqiāng Zìdòng", which literally means "light weapon, rifle, automatic", while the digits indicate the year of development, in this case 2019.
.
The new gas operated assault rifle, and is chambered in the standard 5.8x42mm caliber, but uses a new type of round that has been designed to perform better, The infantry version will have a 14.5-inch barrel, while the shooter version will have an even longer barrel. Visually, the weapon has features of the American AR15 / M16 platform, as well as modern European assault rifles, including a full-length Picatinny rail AND a mounting platform for firearms accessories.

Given the problems with the QBZ-95 assault rifle, it certainly appears that the People's Liberation Army (PLA) is looking for a fresh start with the QBZ-191.

This change to a more traditional design and away from the bullpup design of the QBZ-95 is remarkable. Some three million of the QBZ-95 model were produced and widely exported to various Chinese partner states, including Laos, Myanmar, Pakistan, the Philippines, Rwanda, and Sudan, however a bullpup design has some general disadvantages: users can find the guns ergonomically uncomfortable, while users must also position their face closer to the action to shoot.

The QBZ-95 also gets a notorious bad rap for some of its design features, notably no safety near the trigger hand and the absence of a bolt retention device, poor quality materials in some batches, and the little versatility to integrate more accessories to the weapon ..
