Description The last of the Elemental drakes. This one is for Earth. Before making this one I went through and looked at other people's concepts of earth elementals. I was rather dissapointed to see that they were all gray or brown, drab, hulking creatures. The earth isn't drab at all. It's full of beautiful minerals and stones. In fact, I'd argue that it's the most colorful element.

So here we have a drake decked out in a full array of minerals and metals. Geology quiz: Can you tell me what each of them are?

Got to say this is a very interesting take on the Earth element!
-about those minerals & metals...
I believe some of them are; emerald, amethyst, sapphire, ruby, and amber or topaz...?
-then there's also; gold, silver, onyx, ordinary "rock", and maybe wood...?

Please do reply - I wanna know how many that was correct!

Thank you very much!

You got gold, silver, emerald, amethyst, and ruby correct. The deer-like horns I intended to be living tissue, like antlers, but they could potentially be wood, I suppose. The yellowish stones on his shoulders and flanks are tiger eye quartz, and the green stone at the end of the tail is malachite. The back ridges were supposed to be sandstone.

Nice job guessing! ^_^

Heh, so much for my "knowledge", right... -guess I went too far out on those obvious fantasy-related materials!
But as I said; A very interesting concept for a elemental creature!

...btw, since I'm a fantasy-freak, I oughta know... but what separates a drake from "ordinary" dragons...?

Don't feel bad. My art isn't exactly a scientific image of the stones.

Also, I use the word "drake" because my beasties are dragon-like, but not really what I, personally, would call a dragon because they don't have wings or breathe anything weird. I've heard the word "drake" used synonymously with the word "dragon" though. So it's all a matter of personal opinion. ^_^ There aren't hardcore rules about fantasy creature names.

I know, but anyway...
Aha... well, I just thought I'd ask, since there's not many others using that word, and I guess I hoped you knew! -anyhow, I can always find out it's "meaning" just as easy through wikipedia.

Close. The tail club is actually malachite. But the teeny little front horns are indeed emerald.

malachite... and amathyst and tigers-eye an saphire? fools gold? (but who ever uses fake gold?) rose quarts? emerald? platinum? otherstuff. theres not enough detail for me to pinpoint the colours and the stones. Also I cant remember very much.....
Now Im really curious what the stones are... *reads a comment above*.... okay. I got the malachite and tigers eye. Never ocurred to me the claws were stones as well.
That was fun.

I lean heavily towards forest. The impressioned background has the neatest colours. Lovely.
Interesting concept overall, and thanks for reminding me of some of the neat stones out there. Everyones so into emerald and ruby and gold and silver I forget to remember these things. Hawks eye and hematite are personal favs here. I think I have a piece of red tigers eye here.. hmm.. enough about stones. ...

The branch like antlers are interesting. I really like the spike doodads on the elbow/heel.

Weird comment..

This has to be one of the most fun comments I've ever seen! Thank you! lol

Hematite is one of my favorites too. It's such an interesting mineral. I've honestly never seen a piece of hawk's eye, sadly. I've seen pictures, but never in person. Ah well. i need to putter around in a mineral shop.

Thanks for such a creative, funky comment! I love it!

Just relooking over some of your work and there were some other things about this picture. For one.. God it's colorful.. and for two.. I love the feet! Wierd comment I know.. but they are all shiney rock-armored with awesome talons...

Anyway, I've always been big on the earth element side of things.. and it is colorful, I agree with you.

Yay! Another earth convert! lmao

I had fun with his feet too. ^_^ They're all big and hulking. The "Happy Feet" song will now be lodged in my brain for days. lol

Lol, because of the different possibilities for gemstones and minerals to be different colors and things, it's hard to tell. However, here's my guess, and I applaud you on making Earth a lot more colorful :]

Emerald tail? or.. adventurine or something like that maybe? Gold tail and underbelly? Tiger's eye for the shoulders and thighs, ruby or garnet for the cheeks.. and amethyst horns? sapphire eyes maybe.. I forget translucent blue stones often.. um.. are the arm and let plates silver? and possibly onyx/obsidian claws?

there are my guesses.

Hey, someone with a real geologist's mind! Score! lol

Anyway, you were almost completely right! The cheek horns are indeed garnets, the horns amethyst, gold underbelly and tail plating, tiger eye quartz for the flanks, onyx claws, and silver leg plating. I'm really impressed! The tail club was supposed to be malachite, but I suppose it could be a very marbled adventurine.

Thanks for the comment!

Ooh, malachite! I completely forgot that stone and I absolutely love it! It's beautiful, I wish I had some of my own ;]

You are welcome, I really like this idea of incorperating gemstones into the body of an earth elemental instead of.. ivy or something.

Yeah. For some reason a lot of earth elementals get tied up with plants. So, to me, they look more like an Ent than a representation of Earth. lol But that's just my own opinion.
