Description Okay, I decided to recycle that picture I did months ago and to colour it. Another different coloring technique as you can see (as regards the characters).

Experimenting with colouring again
This time it's more anime-alike, thus there's a plain base shading, nothing too elaborated. But even this kind of colouring takes some time because I have to carefully trace the shadow zones from the light ones using the polygonal lasso tool. And it was not a joke, especially when I had to deal with their hair. Oh the hair.
You noticed that the outline is not black. It corresponds to a darker colour according to the part that delimits.
This trick makes the picture even more enjoyable, right?

I hate how i drew Isaac's hand and Alex. Especially Alex. Seriously, I won't ever draw characters without references... I made several touches to his face because it was terribly oblonged. But I couldn't screw up his hair so changes are minor. And remember that I drew this time ago. Now I have a more accurate drawing technique. You'll see in my next deviation, which is a comic

Oh, I report here the description related to this pic in its pencil version:
"I love Mia, and as I started drawing her, I thought to make her rather worried, because she knows that something bad will happen again...
Yeah, Alex; after saving the world, the Adepts are all happy but Mia knows that it's not the end at all... she knows that, somehow, Alex is still alive and is watching them from the depth of Mt. Aleph..."

Whoa, thank you very much for the feedback!
I know I'm late in replying, I'm answering to all the old comments right now as I've been inactive for so long.

Anyways, I find myself kinda horrified if I look at my old pics too... but well, we all start from somewhere to get to where we are now, right?

Lol, yeah. It's okay, I don't always get around to replying to comments, either. o.o (And you were inactive, so at least you have that excuse, XD.)
And I'm looking forward to seeing how you've improved.^^

Whoa, this is great. I just love Mia. She's so beautiful. Her hands are a bit small but her face is amazing.
I also adore how well you captured the rest of the heroes. Their poses are great and convey just the right emotion.

The only one I'm not completely happy with is Alex. His face is a bit too long and his eye is too far away from his nose. I tried to change it in Photoshop (I didn't clean it up, I just wanted to give you an idea what I mean) and got this: [link]
What do you think?

FelixEarth In reply to Steffel [2010-04-17 20:24:19 +0000 UTC]

Oooh thank you very much!

Yeah, I was really disappointed with Alex, because I realized later (after coloring) that his face was not right at all...
Oh and you even bothered yourself in modifying it! That's so sweet of you ^^ The new result is indeed more natural and I have to thank you again for making me notice how it should look like. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll go and change it because it's already done in everything and I wouldn't mess up with the picture...

But I'll surely take this into consideration for the next pictures

You're very welcome.
Don't worry, I usually don't change my pictures much either but I always appreciate advice and as I was amazed by your progress I just wanted to give a little help along the way. I really enjoy looking at your pictures.

Beautiful!! I really love Mia's hair (somehow hair is my favourite parts of every image).

The misty background enhances Mia's doubt on their victory. Or actually, the atmosphere they're in is an oxymoron. It looks warm but feels cold.

I'm looking forward to more of your doujin!!

FelixEarth In reply to BombomDubbie [2010-03-10 23:45:22 +0000 UTC]

You indeed said that: there's a clashing juxtaposition of the backgrounds and the result is a twisted feeling of joy but also worry because of the unexplicable creepy presence that Mia can feel...
Thanks a bunch! ^^ I'm glad you like it

Nice!! I love the anime style
You do a very good job with the hair, especially Mia, her clothes are so well colored, amazing details!

It's cool you colored the lineart, I failed so much when i tried to to that xD
The background is well done too!
There are some small spaces uncolored, but they are hard to spot.

Keep it up, FelixEarth! I can't wait to see your next pic!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FelixEarth In reply to stianmarton [2010-03-07 22:52:54 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much!
You know already that I can't make a cheaply colored picture: that's why I can even spend a whole week in coloring (not literally, I mean )
but the results will not disappoint.

And to think of that, the lineart was wobbly and not precise at all... that's why I tried to find a way to "cover" this fault and yeah, I learnt how I could color the lineart without messing around the background. That command called "Load channel as selection" was what I needed to have a trasparent background while preserving the whole lineart.
(if you're interested, I followed a little tutorial that you can find here at Manga University: [link] . That definitely helped me!).
Oh, thanks for noticing the white spots, I'll make sure to cover them soon!

WHEE!!! I'm honored my friend

stianmarton In reply to FelixEarth [2010-03-08 18:46:40 +0000 UTC]

It's cool, but I don't use photoshop.
I use Paint tool SAI for coloring. It's much like Photoshop, but it have focus on drawing.
And i find it alot more easier than Photoshop

But in photshop you got alot more effects and stuff to play with!

FelixEarth In reply to stianmarton [2010-03-12 22:39:27 +0000 UTC]

That's it
There's more and more to discover in photoshop, haha. But even without it, you really make awesome drawings

Wow, really nice! Mia looks especially pretty in this picture. Her expression of uncertainty and fear is well executed. You also did a splendid job with the coloring! This coloring technique is definitely in line with the cell-shade style of most anime.

About Alex, maybe you should try taking out his right eye in the corner. I've noticed that in some manga and anime that the artist excludes the eye that faces away from the audience, even though the angle of the character's face is a lot more direct to the audience. ( If you get what I mean ) I've seen some artists just shading in that excluded part and it looks completely natural. It sorta suggests that the side of the face is so turned away that it ends up being shadowed by the hair and nose.

Overall, good job!

FelixEarth In reply to InspirationDruid26 [2010-03-07 22:35:57 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, my first attempt in anime-coloring isn't that bad right? *super boasting myself *

Is that so? Good, I'll take it into account: I definitely have to polish up the picture because there are also some white spots that ~stianmarton noticed, so I can also work on the hidden part of Alex's face.
And yeah, I understood perfectly: the almost-profile pose is always appealing and for some reason it looks eerier without the eye... lol. This will make Alex even creepier... hehe!

Anyway, thank you for your nice feedback as always !

Yes, I can say that colouring is my best part when I'm working on an artwork
And the background is usually the part where I spend less time but I don't know, it surprises even me when I finish it

Thank you again!

Yeah, it's good to be aware of ones mistakes, but it is good pic., it has quite atmosphere - it freezes me (I hope this phrase has same meaning as in my language XD) how much I can imagine it from pic It's getting dark, shadows extends, temperature is getting low, the three are having fun, but she... she is worried. She remembers his eyes... Owww :3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FelixEarth In reply to Laethnes [2010-03-07 14:24:44 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, you caught the right mood of the picture... that's why I tried to make Alex with his scaring eye.
Generally, what I fail in the outline, I try to fix it during the colouring process... in fact I enjoy more colouring than drawing... because I love experimenting and Photoshop allows me to do so.
I'm really happy that you like it by the way

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Laethnes In reply to FelixEarth [2010-03-07 18:53:55 +0000 UTC]

I can feel the mood of the pic into the bone :3.
How do you do that? Trying fix outline during colouring. I can not imagine it other way than try to redraw lines...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FelixEarth In reply to Laethnes [2010-03-07 23:54:49 +0000 UTC]

Oh? Well, I don't know if you use Photoshop. I always make sure to keep the lineart in a separate layer and I make a new layer for every part of the drawing which requires a different color (skin, hair, eyes, hair and so on...).

I tend to spot the outline errors while coloring because I always zoom in to do that of course. Therefore I go back to the lineart layer and with rubber and brush I can fix the ugly detail. If longer lines need to be corrected, then the Pen tool may come in handy... so you won't make wobbly lines by tracing wtirely with your mouse.

I don't know if this is the kind of explanation you wanted, but I'm willing to help in any case

And thank you again for your positive feedback!

Laethnes In reply to FelixEarth [2010-03-08 07:14:36 +0000 UTC]

No, I'm using GIMP (I don't want buy Photoshop and I sometimes work at Linux), but I think they're similar.
I was asking because of curiosity :3, I get it. Thanks for explanation .
