Description When Melissa Carter moved to New York City, she had high hopes for being discovered for her musical talent. The plan was that she'd become a rockstar. Of course, her plans fell through when she found out that no one wanted to take a chance on a "nobody".

Broke and starving, Melissa took a job as a receptionist at Femmes Fatales Investigations. While it pays for her rent and food, Melissa can't help but feel unfulfilled at work. This is perhaps why she spends more time reading gossip magazines and doing her nails than actually answering phones... much to the chagrin of her boss.

Melissa is a rebellious character whose attitude is undeniable. She's snarky and sarcastic. She's a pop culture junkie who seems to live for television and music. Melissa also parties hard on weekends which often means that she spends most of her time back at work nursing nasty hangovers. She's certainly a flawed character but she's one who's quite fun to see in action.

Melissa's look has always been rooted in more rocker-edged styles. She wears dark eye make-up and styles her hair in choppy layered looks. Physically, Melissa is quite top-heavy. Melissa was trained from an early age in boxing and she continues to practice making her a rather formidable fighter.... when she's not drunk of course.

Just for the record, where exactly is Melissa from?  I ask because I've been going through all of the Femmes-Fatales art here, and I've discovered where all the other "main" characters are from (Nichelle--Atlanta, Adrienne--Boston, Andie & Tai--Vancouver, Mary--Queens, Jennette--Paris).

Like Andie and Tai, Melissa is Canadian. She's from Toronto.

(BTW, it's actually really cool to hear that someone has been browsing through my original art. It's rare that I get comments on them.)

Gotcha.  Oh, BTW, is this the only place we can see anything related to the "Femmes Fatales" series?

At the moment, this is the only place you can see anything related to my original series. I am, however, still working on the first novel. Let me know if you have any questions. I always enjoy discussing my series.

Nice job on her hair (it looks very natural and cool) and facial features, she looks beautiful! And besides the physical she sounds like a character who would be a great person to hang out with.

I like the hair too. Choppy hair is always a bit harder to draw because of the texture and it can often look heavier than it should. Melissa's definitely... interesting... I wouldn't cite her as a "great person to hang out with". Her drinking can be a little too out of control and she's extremely argumentative. Plus, her former relationship with Tai adds a lot of tension to the team.

I think that choppy hair or layered hair can be hard to draw but it always adds a nice look.

Oh I guess that if she was to get unruly when she's drunk it would be less than fun, though I guess it does seem like the whole extroverted BFF thing since she seems like she'd tell fun stories. Plus she kind of reminds me of Faith in the tough girl with a wild side aspect and I always wanted to hang with Faith though as Buffy (and Xander when she tried to choke/hump him) found out it wasn't always so much fun.

Oh and I guess that the whole choosing to do her nails rather than answer phones pays off because she her nail polish = awesome! By the way I love the rocker touches you added to her outfit.

I wonder what happened to make her and Tai have tension.

Ooh, nice comparison! Hannah, my friend who played Melissa in the movie I made in high school, really influenced the character a lot. She's what made me make her into a more rock-oriented character with more spunk and attitude. Hannah's also a huge Buffy fan so it's only natural that there be some Buffy-related things about Melissa.

But Melissa doesn't fit under the "extroverted BFF" category too well. She's got charisma and attitude... but she can also be extremely self-centered and isn't always the most social person. She's not really trained in proper human interactions. Hence why she gets into a lot of fights with people. In fact, the introductory scene for her character in the first season is a fight she has with Jennette (over a television remote).

You like the nail polish? Awesomesauce!!

Ohhhhh there's a lot of shit that went down between Melissa and Tai. Actually, their break-up was the focus of the film I made in high school. Although, I did change certain things around. Most of the tension between them has to do with their views on sex. Melissa views it very casually while Tai views it more romantically. She's a "sex on the first date" kind of girl and he's a "sex when I fall in love" kind of guy.

Oh cool, you'll have to tell me more about the movie or maybe show it if you have a copy. That sounds like she added a really cool layer to the character.

Oh my! Was it a big fight?

Oh wow they're total opposites on that issue! It must have been a pretty chaotic relationship.

I actually had it uploaded to this forum I go to but it seems that the video hosting part was taken down. Boo. But I do have the DVD. XD Don't know how I'd share the movie with you though.... I'm sure you'd have a lot of fun watching the bloopers at the end. They're HI-LARIOUS!! I watched them this morning to cheer me up. I also act in the film BTW.

Jennette and Melissa's? Naw! It's just a tug-of-war over the remote because Melissa is shirking her responsibilities so Jennette turns the TV off... but Melissa wants it back on. Immaturity ensues.

The series takes place long after their relationship has ended so we see most of the fallout and aftermath of it. Although, I think flashbacks or at least monologues about their relationship would be great to put in. They loved each other a lot but they're volotile for each other. As the series progresses, all they do is hurt each other.

I bet you are a much better actor than I am, I tried out for a part in the school play Junior year and totally choked. I never tried acting before so I kind of looked like an idiot, but in the end I'm kind of happy I didn't get the part because it was Amadeus and if I got the part I'd need to dress in a silly looking costume (Plus I didn't really like the movie). I guess I should have figured that I'd be bad at it, I actually never sing in public after this incident that happened where in music class we had to do a song where I was supposed to do karaoke to a song and I thought I was going to throw up since I was so embarrassed.

Oh that's good! It actually sounds like it would make for a pretty funny scene.

That sounds like a pretty toxic relationship. Do they ever bury the hatchet?

Aw. I know how you feel. When I tried out for West Side Story at my high school, I was super nervous. I didn't get any part and I was super bummed. Nerves are so tricky! I mean, when I did Hairspray I was a fucking wreck backstage. The day I was performing in front of my family and friends I felt like I was going to throw up. If I hadn't had such great support in the other actors I'd have definitely lost it. I actually flubbed the words to my song earlier that day too (but no one noticed ). OHHH!!! And we had to do a song in vocal class in grade 8 and me and my partner chose to sing "Fallen" by Alicia Keys. Basically I choked and forgot nearly all the words during my solo (despite the fact that I pretty much knew that song inside and out). So yeah... everyone gets nervous...

People seemed to respond to the Melissa vs. Jennette conflict when I presented it in an excerpt in my creative writing class last year. Usually, Melissa is the character people respond to most because of how much attitude she has.

Their relationship is complicated. They patch things up towards the end of the first season but the shit fucking hits the fan by the end of the second (during the Madonna musical basically their friendship gets put to the test and pretty much doesn't survive that film). Luckily, there are future seasons that promise an eventual "burial of the hatchet".
