Description Part 26 of my head canon DC Universe redesigns.

ORIGINS

With a new wave of heroes rising to combat the evils unleashed upon the Earth, a secret society is formed within the underworld in order to band against these so-called good guys. Spearheaded by Lex Luthor, this society is the largest and most profitable criminal organization in the world comprised almost exclusively of metahumans. The inner circle, dubbed the Injustice League, is perhaps the deadliest and most dangerous gathering of villains imaginable. These five generals lead their own factions of villains with the intention of achieving total world domination.

BLACK MANTA

David Ray was a marine biologist who spent his every waking moment out at sea. He always felt most comfortable when observing marine life in its natural habitat. David was frequently accompanied on these assignments by his father, a former Navy commander. On one mission, their boat entered into disputed waters between Themyscira and an Atlantean colony. They were immediately swarmed by Atlantean soldiers, who promptly interrogated the humans with vicious torture techniques.

The Amazons eventually interfered, but were too late to prevent the death of David's father at the hands of the Atlantean interrogators. Blaming Aquaman for this event, due to his continued disputes with the Amazons and a lack of control over his rebellious colonies, David became the costumed villain Black Manta. Armed with incredible armour and devastatingly powerful weapons, he now fights as one of the generals in the Secret Society. He's also father to the hero Aqualad, who he had at one time attempted to use as a pawn against Aquaman.

Design-wise, Manta is pretty straightforward. I didn't veer too far away from his canon look. My inspiration here was to marry his usual look with that of a Predator.

THE JOKER

Back when Gotham City was ruled by Carmine Falcone, Jack Napier was a prominent hitman in Falcone's empire known as the Red Hood. During this time, Oswald Cobblepot was rising to prominence as a force to be reckoned with in Gotham City. His successful casino and unpredictable behaviour made him a threat to be feared. Naturally, Jack was assigned to take the wannabe gangster out. Unfortunately, Batman had caught wind of the hit and showed up with the GCPD on his tail in an attempt to stop it. During a skirmish, Jack was knocked into a vat of chemicals and apparently disappeared forever.

Six months later, the psychotic criminal known only as the Joker made his splashy appearance. He helped to usher in a new era of anarchy in the city, constantly playing gangs against one another and killing as many authorities as possible in the process. He also took on a partner - Harley Quinn - and bathed the city in red.

The Joker is hard as hell to redesign, so I really didn't do too much to alter his appearance. I wanted to give him a very classic, old school gangster kind of a look. Like, a purple '70s era pimp or something. Facially, I needed him to be menacing. So he's got parts of his face sewn and his mouth is opened into a freaky grin.

LEX LUTHOR

Lex Luthor is a brilliant businessman who grew up being the best at everything - that is until the day Superman showed up in Metropolis. No longer the media darling he once was, Lex ruminated over this intrusion by an alien. Fearing what this might represent for humanity, Lex launched an all-out campaign to destroy Superman's reputation.

Lex has since allied himself with other criminal masterminds in order to create the Secret Society. However, his endgame remains unknown to his fellow comrades in the Injustice League. His ultimate goal is to eradicate the world of all metahumans and aliens - regardless of whether they are good or evil. The Earth, he believes, is for humans and humans alone.

I was partly inspired by the Dark Avengers for this group and I saw Lex as being like the Norman Osbourne - thus his suit ended up having elements similar to Iron Patriot. I wanted to keep him looking very modern and streamlined, versus his bulkier suits. Rather than go purple and green for the suit, I swapped the purple for black in order to match his teammates. It kind of made him look like a Green Lantern though.

CIRCE

Circe is a demigoddess who has lived through centuries of conflict and revolutions. She lived quietly on her hidden island in the Mediterranean, occasionally venturing out to manipulate weak-minded men into conflicts with one another. This garnered her great favour with Ares - the God of War - who found himself drawn to Circe's devious tendencies. Their liaisons were passionate, but fraught with jealousy and loathing. Circe couldn't understand Ares' alliance with the Amazons, while Ares was furious with Circe's many dashing lovers.

When the beautiful Princess Diana of Themyscira was born, Ares had ceased his communications with Circe and dedicated himself to being an unseen godparent to the child Amazon. Circe's envy for the child grew stronger with each passing year and reached its boiling point when she learned of a prophecy that predicted the powerful enchantress would be stricken down by the Amazon Princess. Now, Circe has placed herself on high alert and will stop at nothing to destroy the heroine known as Wonder Woman. She's allied herself with the Injustice League, but views herself as superior to them all and has planned a special fate for them in her schemes to kill Wonder Woman.

Circe is my favourite here. She's made to look like a dark twisted version of Wonder Woman, drawing inspiration largely from Terry Dodson's design for the character. I see her being very much like a Maleficent figure.

ZOOM

Hunter Zolomon was Barry Allen's closest friend at the Central City Police Department - aside from Patty Spivot, of course. Hunter was a detective who worked occasionally with Barry and the pair developed a kinship due to their similar familial backgrounds. Much like Barry, Hunter's mother had been murdered and his father was imprisoned for it. The difference between them being that Barry's father was innocent and Hunter's was in fact a serial killer.

Hunter was eventually caught in the crosshairs between the Flash and his many rogues, prompting the former to save Hunter from an onslaught brought on by Weather Wizard and Heatwave using his incredible speed. Unfortunately, Hunter had been badly disfigured during this encounter. Strangely, something else had happened as well. The combination of the Weather Wizard's lightning mixed with Heatwave's fire reacted with Barry's Speed Force, siphoning part of it into Hunter. Jaded and angry over this turn of events, Hunter fashioned himself into an anti-Flash known as Zoom. His goal? Find out the Flash's true identity and destroy his life. Not just that, but he desires to kill the Rogues as well. This aligned perfectly with the Injustice League, who promised the Rogues head on a platter for his assistance. After all, the Rogues declined membership into the Society and no one turns down Lex Luthor.

I cheated a bit here. I used my design for the Flash and merely palette swapped it. This is largely because in my head I imagine Zoom stealing a replica of the Flash's costume from the Flash Museum and twisting it to suit his outlook. The difference here though, beyond the colours, is the mask. I wanted it to be similar to what we've seen on TV since I think that look is super freaky.

SHOUT OUTS

For this piece, I allowed you all to select this roster. Black Manta, the Joker and Lex Luthor were the most voted for characters in a poll I conducted, with Zoom also being another popular choice. Circe I added in as a replacement for Cheetah (who landed in the top five), since I'd put the latter on Villainy Inc (seen here: fav.me/d9uyusf ). Note - Sinestro was also a popular option and even landed in the top five. However, I felt that he didn't quite fit in here since I see more nobility and reason to his character. Plus, he's a space threat.

So, I'd like to dedicate this piece to everyone who contributed to the selection of this roster. Specifically, this goes out to Jayko-15 , Hernan20X , Andster11 , K-Jounin , bkno , TristanDavis , MASTER-OF-SUPRISE , Steelpoodle , featureanimestar97 , spider-fan116 , Jose-Ramiro , ParisNJones , Jovan2013 , kingziggy , Jyger85 , DanFalcon , and Curia-DD .

Enjoy!

Heh I think my favorite villain of this draw is Black Manta. He is very vengeful.

I really like your take on the Injustice League here! Circe is probably my favorite design, personally, but I really like your takes on Joker and Zoom's origins too: Joker because it makes me think a bit of the Burton movie and the DCAU; and Zoom because it's both faithful to his origin (friend of the Flash turned bitter and then evil) while still offering a new explanation for his powers. ^^

Thank you! I'm really glad that you're digging the takes I had on those characters here.

Yeah They're really good. I've been planning my own reimagining of the DCU, so it's fun to see what other people come up with too

Oh, by the way - I really like that Black Manta's last name is Ray. Please tell me that's a deliberate pun

Would you be surprised that I hear that a lot? It's not uncommon for people to say they're planning on doing their own take on the DCU, with some even saying that my concepts inspired them to do so. Some are even bold enough to say they want to use (i.e. steal) some of my ideas while others use the comments section of my art as a place of advertising their ideas (which I always find distasteful).

I honestly can't remember! It probably was a deliberate pun.

Yeah, I bet that happens. Sorry about the people who steal ideas. If I ever find something I'd like to use, I do my best to get the permission of the original creator. ^^

It's a tricky situation with fanon because you literally have no ownership over the characters. You can't really be mad at people for taking an idea of yours when you're already leeching off of someone else's ideas to begin with. In all honesty, what's more frustrating in being a creator is that people would rather see me work on fanon rather than my original work that I have full ownership over and that means more to me. It's like "You love my work, but only when it's on characters you already know/like."

Indeed, that's definitely frustrating.

Awesome too. Especially Luthor due to the Norman Osborn elements thrown in. Always knew the two had their similarities.

Femmes-Fatales In reply to Onisatsu18 [2017-02-25 21:53:15 +0000 UTC]

Certainly. The way in which Norman Osborne became the head of H.A.M.M.E.R. is certainly reminiscent of how Lex became President of the United States.

Femmes-Fatales In reply to Onisatsu18 [2017-02-25 22:04:58 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure if I'd say that's cool. Having morally corrupt individuals, especially those as psychotic as Osborn or as xenophobic as Lex, in those positions of power is anything but.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Onisatsu18 In reply to Femmes-Fatales [2017-02-25 22:06:08 +0000 UTC]

I know. I meant how similar they are. And now that I think about it, Lex is xenophobic against metahumans.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Femmes-Fatales In reply to Onisatsu18 [2017-02-25 22:41:51 +0000 UTC]

Xenophobia is the fear of individuals from another country. In Lex's case, it becomes individuals from another planet. Any fear or distrust for metahumans would be given a different name altogether.

Kinda stretching it with Zoom since it looks like you are going withe the CW version... but the red indicates he's the Black Flash

Femmes-Fatales In reply to Xenomaster [2017-02-08 20:23:03 +0000 UTC]

I don't watch the CW series, so it'd be difficult for me to go with that version beyond the superficial. I went with black mostly since I find the all-yellow costume to be a little cheery for a villain who should be on the more menacing side.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Xenomaster In reply to Femmes-Fatales [2017-02-08 22:04:41 +0000 UTC]

The Reverse Flash's suit didn't look "cheery"

media.dcentertainment.com/site…

Unless you're referring to the television look. I mean, I'm not entirely certain what your point is. That you want him in yellow? That you think it should mimic the CW series?

Either way, it's just an aesthetic decision I made to have this group look cohesive. Plus, this is part of a head canon (effectively, alternate reality) wherein the continuity and circumstances are not wholly the same as they are elsewhere.

Xenomaster In reply to Femmes-Fatales [2017-02-08 22:42:12 +0000 UTC]

Just saying he looks too much like the Black Flash

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Femmes-Fatales In reply to Xenomaster [2017-02-08 22:50:57 +0000 UTC]

As you can see here - fav.me/da1rxog - there was only one "evil" Flash in this project. So does it really matter what colour his costume is if there's only one?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Xenomaster In reply to Femmes-Fatales [2017-02-08 22:53:10 +0000 UTC]

Black Flash isn't "evil". He's more of the "Speed Reaper"

Femmes-Fatales In reply to Xenomaster [2017-02-08 23:10:12 +0000 UTC]

Hence my usage of quotes. If you feel like I've done a great disservice to the Flash mythos, I'm certainly open to recommendations of which comics I should read to better portray the characters that are part of that area of the DC Universe.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Xenomaster In reply to Femmes-Fatales [2017-02-08 23:15:11 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. And to further argue that "yellow isn't cheery", look at Sinestro or Parallax

Femmes-Fatales In reply to Xenomaster [2017-02-08 23:19:04 +0000 UTC]

So, are there specific comic runs you feel I need to read? You sidestepped the request.

Xenomaster In reply to Femmes-Fatales [2017-02-09 09:25:18 +0000 UTC]

Well, I'd read Flash Rebirth or the New 52 volume 8: Zoom

Femmes-Fatales In reply to Xenomaster [2017-02-09 14:02:58 +0000 UTC]

That's all? Well, I've read Flash: Rebirth along with the volumes that proceeded it, Flashpoint, the first few volumes of the New 52 series, and the crossover with Wonder Woman during Greg Rucka's run. I was kind of hoping you'd be able to recommend something that only a long-time, hardcore Flash fan could. Aw well!

Xenomaster In reply to Femmes-Fatales [2017-02-09 16:43:02 +0000 UTC]

Volume 8

I'd also recommend The Flash vol. 2, #138 (June 1998), where Wally had to deal with the Black Flash

Femmes-Fatales In reply to Xenomaster [2017-02-09 19:05:05 +0000 UTC]

Alrighty.

So, which Flash issues or runs are your personal favourites? Obviously I'd like to read beyond those that deal with Reverse-Flash, Black Flash, etc.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Xenomaster In reply to Femmes-Fatales [2017-02-09 23:17:12 +0000 UTC]

Well, I'm mostly a Green Lantern guy... but I did like a few of the stories in the New 52, anything to do with the Rogues or just anything by Geoff Johns. But I'm mostly an Eobard Thawne fan.

So I've heard. Though it had its share of flaws, I enjoyed the first season of Supergirl. I also watched the first couple of seasons of Arrow. I disliked the directions they took for the characters and overall became irritated by the treatment of female characters based on what happens in those seasons and beyond. I'd hope the Flash has a better track record of translating its characters more faithfully from the comics and that the women aren't just there to be fridged.

Femmes-Fatales In reply to Xenomaster [2017-02-10 19:00:32 +0000 UTC]

I've heard that the hierarchy in terms of quality is Flash > Supergirl > Arrow > Legends of Tomorrow. I'm curious to see how the musical crossover turns out since they have so many talented singers on both Flash and Supergirl. It's a shame they didn't bring back Ciara Renee after the first season of LoT since she would have slayed in the musical crossover. IMHO, she has the best voice of all the people who have been in the Flarrowverse.

Femmes-Fatales In reply to Xenomaster [2017-02-10 21:18:09 +0000 UTC]

It's mostly been my experience from asking others who watch the Flarrowverse shows that Legends is awful. Maybe it got better after its first season? There were numerous complaints regarding the quality and overall writing. A great many complaints were regarding Hawkgirl's character, who was obviously written out at the end of the show's first season.
