Description The inspiration behind this piece came from a couple places. The first was through my own musings about how there's a lack of symmetry currently between the generations of the Trinity's younger partners. Specifically, Wonder Woman lacks a Wonder Girl who is contemporary to Damian's generation. The other source of inspiration was the poll I recently held. I asked my watchers to pick which DC Comics team they wanted me to redesign (or re-[re-]redesign depending on the team) after I finished with the Justice League. The Teen Titans pulled out first, but no one had specifically indicated which line-up they wanted to see. As such, my mind went to the potential for a roster similar to the original five but for Damian's generation. Both of these led me to imagining Star-Blossom (AKA Peony McGill) as the new Wonder Girl.

Star-Blossom is a metahuman with the ability of chlorokinesis who made a singular appearance in Wonder Woman 75th Anniversary Special and was created by Gail Simone and Colleen Doran. Aside from Etta's niece Destiny, Star-Blossom is the only character Wonder Woman has really interacted with who is contemporary to Damian.Β Going forward with this idea of Peony as the new Wonder Girl, this also meant finding a place for Cassandra Sandsmark. I thought, "Hey, maybe she could be Earth-1's Fury!" Since I felt like drawing both Peony and Cassie, I added Donna into the mix to reflect all three "sidekick" generations.

The designs are quite simple. Cassie's is a mix of her New 52 ensemble with elements of my Fury redesign tossed in. Donna is wearing a mix between her Rebirth look and the mini-skirt redesign I'd done a couple years back. Peony appears in a modernized version of the original Wonder Girl costume.

As with all the DC Comics redesigns I do, these gals exist within my own head canon and have their own individual backstories that are slightly revised from the main canon. Continue reading for brief bios on each of these three characters.

Donna Troy, The Original Wonder Girl
Carlos and Dorotea Higuera were eager to have children, but they struggled to conceive due to problems with their reproductive health. Nevertheless, they continued to pray that one day they would be blessed with a beautiful, healthy child. Their prayers were answered when the Titans Rhea gifted the couple with a daughter they named Donna.

For a time, Donna lived a relatively simple life in the suburbs until her home was destroyed by a mysterious fire. Her parents perished in the fire, but Donna survived after being rescued by Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman took Donna to Themyscira, where she was adopted by Queen Hippolyta and was trained to become a great warrior.

During this time, the Oracles discovered that Donna was truly a child of the Titans and that she had divine gifts granted to her by them. Donna used these innate gifts to become the original Wonder Girl and helped to found the Teen Titans. Since then, she has proven herself as a hero and is well-respected beyond simply being Wonder Woman's kid sister.

Cassandra Sandsmark, The Second Wonder Girl
Cassandra "Cassie" Sandsmark is the daughter of Zeus and the mortal Helena Sandsmark. As with his many other affairs, Zeus' tryst with Helena was brief and he left before he knew that she had become pregnant. Helena raised Cassie as a single mother and made her living as a museum curator, specializing in Ancient Greek artifacts.

Due to her experience, Helena was handpicked by Wonder Woman to work in the Themysciran Embassy. As a fan of Wonder Woman's, Cassie tagged along with her mother to work and followed the Amazon Princess wherever she went.Β

As Cassie came into her divine powers, she pleaded and begged her mother to let her train. Helena eventually yielded to Cassie's pleas and allowed her to leave Gateway City in order to hone her powers on Themyscira. Under the tutelage of the Amazon Artemis, Cassie trained hard. Impressed by Cassie's progress, Donna gifted the mantle of Wonder Girl to her.

Cassie became one of the key members of the second iteration of the Teen Titans, alongside Tim Drake, Conner Kent and Bart Allen. During this time, Cassie gained the attention of Ares. He gave her a powerful lasso that increased the strength of her powers by channeling her anger. This served as inspiration for Cassie as she and her contemporaries graduated high school, prompting her to change her codename to Fury.

Peony McGill, The Third Wonder Girl
Like Cassie, Peony McGill is a demigod of sorts. She is the daughter of a nymph and a mortal, which has granted her the innate gift of chlorokinesis.

Peony is a blerd who loves superheroes, especially Wonder Woman. From a young age, she used her powers to pretend she was the Amazon Princess' partner. Little did she know, her wish would eventually come true. While on a speaking engagement in Peony's city, Wonder Woman was attacked by Giganta. Peony joined the fray to help her idol. Impressed by the little girl's tenacity, Wonder Woman stayed in contact with her.

Upon learning that Peony was the child of a nymph, Wonder Woman offered to take her under her wing. With the blessing of both Donna and Cassie, Peony became the new Wonder Girl. To celebrate the occasion, Peony was gifted a floral lasso by Demeter and Hermes' golden sandals.

I truly enjoyed drawing these three and especially had fun imagining origins for Peony since she doesn't have a backstory as Star-Blossom.

As always, I love hearing from you all so please feel free to leave feedback in the comments section.

Enjoy!

Well before I get into the designs, can I just say that I love these new name tags? They look really awesome!

Alright, minor aesthetic out of the way, time for the designs themselves; FABULOUS!

You know me, I love Donna. And Donna here? SHE LOOKS AMAZING! I always loved her black uniform, and I like how you've designed it here. The black and silver looks sleek and it works really well with her skirt and line work. I also really like her pose and expression. In fact I love all their poses and expressions. They're all really good, and they help to define their personalities well. I also like the backstory for her. I can't quite recall if this is the previous one you've used, but it works really well, and it's a nice streamlining.Β

Cassie as Fury (or at least, the Earth-1 Fury) is a great concept. Her design here is great. I love keeping the Wonder Woman logo just to her belt, it helps streamlining the uniform. I also like the single shoulder pad with the straps. It adds a lot of character, and helps distinguish her. I also really like her being in red. It just looks so damn great.

Peony is adorable. That is what I shall open with. Her character from the comics is adorable and I love the concept of her being the newest Wonder Girl. I love the design you have for her. I love the backstory you have for her. I love how her lasso was given to her by Demeter and is floral. It's adorable and I think it fits really well into the Wonder Woman canon. I desperately want her to be Wonder Girl now. Can we crowdfund this? Hell I would WRITE this. Just give me this DC!

So uh, there are my rambling thoughts. Fabulous work Taylor!

Thanks! I'm grateful for the in-depth feedback.

I'm actually kind of surprised to have gotten a couple comments regarding the name tags. It's something I've been wanting to try, but wasn't quite sure how to execute it. Should I be apply them to future pieces?

Yes! It's the same backstory I had for Donna the last couple of times I've posted art of her. So, it's sticking around. The only thing I left out was the bits with Thia. It's still canon, but I didn't want to go into it for special reasons. Glad the skirt is going over well too.

The straps and shoulder armour on Cassie seem to have gone over well, which is cool. I'm also happy that some folks like the Fury moniker for her.

Haha! What I'm most happy about is the enthusiastic response to Peony, even from people who previously had no idea she existed.

I would 100% say you should add them in the future more. they're really eye-catching.

The backstory you made for Donna is really strong and concise. Too bad DC can't ever make one that's concise.

Well that's just because Peony is amazing and a precious little bean who has to be in everything ever. Like ever.

Femmes-Fatales In reply to DanFalcon [2018-05-08 17:36:27 +0000 UTC]

I'll keep that in mind!

It's not that they haven't had any backstories for Donna that were strong and concise, it's just that they never stick to one.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DanFalcon In reply to Femmes-Fatales [2018-05-08 21:12:34 +0000 UTC]

I often wonder if they just have all of her backstories together on a dartboard, and choose which one to use by throwing a dart at the board. Whichever backstory it lands on is the one they use, and they recycle this method for every issue her backstory is mentioned in.

It makes about as much sense as any other reason.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Femmes-Fatales In reply to DanFalcon [2018-05-09 18:25:31 +0000 UTC]

That sounds surprisingly accurate! Haha!

The interesting thing is that almost every one of her revised origins correlate to continuity-altering events. In many of these instances, it's because Wonder Woman's origins have been rebooted. Crisis on Infinite Earths and Flashpoint both hit the restart button for Wonder Woman, which thus necessitated the change in Donna's origins. The exception was the John Byrne revision and the subsequent clean-up Phil Jimenez had to do to make it work circa Infinite Crisis. I'll never understand why Byrne felt the need to give Donna a new origin. It made no sense and served no function. Then again, his entire run took a chainsaw to everything that George Perez and co. had done Post-Crisis.

DanFalcon In reply to Femmes-Fatales [2018-05-09 23:24:55 +0000 UTC]

New writers just love to pick and choose don't they. And you're right about Byrne using a chainsaw, it was one hell of a rough hack-job that he did.

Femmes-Fatales In reply to DanFalcon [2018-05-10 16:14:32 +0000 UTC]

For him, a lot of it came from being given creative freedom. He methodically set about undoing much of the groundwork that had been done before him because of his own biases. A big one was that he wanted Wonder Woman to remain a hero from World War II. That's why we got the mindf*ck of Hippolyta being the first Wonder Woman instead of Diana with all that time travel mess.

DanFalcon In reply to Femmes-Fatales [2018-05-11 19:10:31 +0000 UTC]

Ah good old time travel. You can always trust it to mess with the continuity and create convoluted backstories. It's even better when retcons are included.

I ADORE these designs! The whole visual design, here, is really good too; I love the design of the nametags for each of these characters.

Β

Fury's costume gives me this amazing gladiatorial vibe, particularly with the pieces on her shins clearly evoking sandals and the plate on her shoulder, the straps connecting to it really reminding me of the straps on Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman’s outfit. The red bodysuit looks really good, both just from a purely aesthetic standpoint, but also because it plays into anger being a core part of her character. Same goes for the way you've designed her lasso, too; really speaks to her character visually, again, and also differentiates her from Diana more.

Β

Troy's outfit looks amazing, too. The whole thing has a really sleek look; I love it. Like I’m having trouble writing this because I don’t know where to start; the way that the top and skirt, reminiscent of Diana’s outfit, contrasts it by being a single colour to blend into more of a dress, the stars along the skirt and on the chest, the thigh highs, the gaps on the sides of the boots. The whole thing just comes together beautifully, to be honest. Fantastic work.

Β

And finally, having saved the best for last, Peony. I didn’t know about this character beforehand, but after having seen and read this, and looking up the character in the original comics, I think she might be an immediate favourite. This character is already amazing, and I really hope that she gets more attention and recognition. I really like the back-story you came up with for her, too. Were there any particular nymphs from Greek mythology that you’d had in mind for her parentage, like Chloris perhaps? Her costume is amazing as well; I love the way that she incorporates elements of Diana’s outfit into hers whilst also giving things her own spin. I LOVE the floral lasso, β€˜because it’s just such a beautiful thing visually and a really heart-warming concept, and I LOVE the way that the sandals, perhaps unintentionally, resemble converse. The whole look is just brilliant; it really just perfectly captures her love for Diana.

Β

As I said before, I just absolutely love this image. Amazing job.Β

Many thanks! I really appreciate the feedback on this piece.

I can't take credit for Cassie's lasso. She's been using the red lasso since the Geoff Johns run on Teen Titans. It was really the basis for the idea of me using the Fury moniker for her.

I didn't expect many people to know who Peony is, but I'm glad to see there's interest in her. I'd love to see more of her too!

I'd originally intended to name Peony's mother by doing further research, but ran out of time before posting this piece. Chloris would be a great choice, though the mythology surrounding her is a bit limited. What I do know is that Peony's mother would have been part of Artemis' envoy.

As for her sandals, they're actual sandals. Meaning, they're open with straps. They're worn over shoes. Both Artemis and Cassie used those specific sandals in the comics in order to fly. So yes, those are converse. I chose them specifically since they can be used as a nod to Diana's red and white boots.

I like Cassie's shoulder pad; it works well with having the WW more prominently featured in the belt than in the top.
And Peony's lasso looks adorable. Making her half-nymph makes sense.

Yay! I was definitely aiming for a cute vibe with Peony. A floral lasso was just too good of an idea to pass up. There's a lot of relevant mythology to play up too with her powers (hence why Demeter and nymphs were chosen).

I think it's safe to say most people wouldn't be familiar with Peony. She's only appeared in a few panels as Star-Blossom in that anniversary issue I mentioned in the description.

Out of curiosity, what reminds you of Shuri? It's an interesting comparison since they have different ages, abilities, personalities, nationalities, hairstyles, and clothing styles. The origin I came up with is also dissimilar to Shuri's. I suppose their one commonality is that they're both carefree black girls.

Another fantastic job, and omg this peony girl is cute as a button!! I never got around to reading the 75th anniversary special so I haven't heard of her but now after a Google search im falling in love with the idea, especially your design for her as wonder girl! I always thought Lyta Milton (daughter of Circe, Jr amazon, and surprising friend of Diana's) would make a good wonder girl for Damian's generation, but star blossom is an actual established hero (Lyta was more theoretical and might not even exist currently) and again shes cute as a button.Β
I also love Donna's design, the skirt definitely fits. And the fury name fits Cassie's color scheme, and I'm not sure if I've said this but I'm not fond of casual clothes as "costumes" (which Cassie has always liked apparently) so as a real costume this one definitely gets a plus, worthy of an honary Amazon. You cleaned up the new 52 design nicely

Thank you so much! I appreciate the feedback.

I would expect that Peony would be unknown to most people. As Star-Blossom, she seems to be known only by Wonder Woman fans and Gail Simone fans. That said, she's a bit of a phenom on social media. Her panels are very popular (especially the action figure line).

I chose Peony since she was the best candidate. Lyta Trevor, Stephanie Trevor, Drusilla, Etta's niece Destiny, and Circe's daughter were considered, but Peony made the most sense. She's adorable, she's got cool powers that can be mythologically linked, and she adds much-needed intersectionality to the sometimes whitebread world of Wonder Woman.

I can totally be the same way with casual clothes as costumes sometimes too, so I feel you! I find it often sticks out in a weird way in team pictures. I like a slight sense of aesthetic uniformity.

This is how Cassie looked in her first appearances: vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/ma… She was created by John Byrne and was basically a younger carbon copy of sorts of Vanessa Kapatelis. However, she was obviously more androgynous than Nessie. For the longest time, I actually thought Cassie was a boy when I was a kid.
