Description EDIT (April 23, 2007) : Finally got around to finishing the tutorial, which now includes not only creating the denim texture, but also the seams, wrinkles, and threads! I hope you'll be happy with the results. I'm really pleased with the way it turned out, if I do say so myself! The original tutorial has been deleted.

If you need the scanline pattern, you can download it here: www.deviantart.com/deviation/3…

This tutorial is in html format. Just download the zip file to a convenient location, like your desktop. Double-click the zip file and move the html file and the "Tutorial Images" folder to your desktop (the files folder and html file must be in the same location for the images to show up.) Double-click the html file and the tutorial will open.

Enjoy!

It's been so long since I've done anything with GIMP, I'm not sure if I know how! Β  Let me take a look and see what I can do.Β  It may take me awhile, but I'll try.Β  Do you have specific questions I can help you with?

The filters in 2.8 are a bit different. Some of them don't have the same functionality as the older versions. It takes a bit of tinkering, but it can be done.

I can;t get the scanline to work out. Idk if the file you provided was bad or what, but is this something I can make myself? and if so how, or where can I find information on it?

This is complete awesomeness. Thank you very much. I'm using it on my cubee of me. You'll have to take a look at it when it's up and let me know what you think. (I just hope the picture is big enough that the jeans show up well.) I'll let you know as soon as I post it.

Has it been mentioned you're amazing?

I've actually been looking for how to do Denim textures for a while now (since I don't like it when my jeans look like tight blue pants and nothing more) so..yeah...

(If anyone was wondering why nothing I ever draw includes jeans, now you know. But you probably weren't wondering, cause...admittedly, my gallery still sucks ass.)

I am attempting to use this tutorial with Photoshop CS2 and I cant get the pattern to show up in the selection even though I unzipped it into Adobe>Adobe Photoshop>resets>atterns. I went to it and double clicked it just to see if anything happened and it said the file was corrupted?

Well, unfortunately, I don't use PS and not sure how it works in that regard. However, creating scanlines is pretty straightforward. Here's a PS link to a scanline tutorial: [link]

I design clothing for a virtual community. Is there any way I can scale the scan lines down to maybe 1.5 or so?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

fence-post In reply to brwngem [2008-02-14 20:22:14 +0000 UTC]

Actually, disregard my previous response. I tried it out and it doesn't look right. I did a quick scale of the pattern to a 3X3 in size (I had to touch up the individual pixels with the pencil tool) and then saved with a new name. It works fine and maybe it will be small enough for you. I don't know how much smaller you can get though.

fence-post In reply to brwngem [2008-02-14 20:13:49 +0000 UTC]

You could probably scale it, but I don't know how well it would look. It might look fine, but here's another thing to try:

Open up the scanline pattern in GIMP (File > Open) - go to the patterns folder and find "diagscanline3.pat"
Then, set your foreground color to black
Grab the pencil tool and under the brushes tab, choose the "Circle (01) 3X3" brush
Zoom in really close on the pattern (800% or greater)
With the pencil tool click at points (1,0) (0,1) (4,3) & (3,4).
Save the pattern (or rename it as something else and save it - just in case you still want the other pattern)
Refresh your patterns and see how well that works.

Let me know if this works or if you need clarification.

Great tutorial. the tricky part is getting the wrinkle layer realistic enough.
What font did you use to write on your design?

fence-post In reply to viperex [2007-08-13 13:22:31 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, the wrinkles are definitely the tricky part. The font is called Scriptina....you can download it here: [link]

Take care.

I'm having trouble with the scanline pattern. How can I make it bigger?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

fence-post In reply to eversoclever101 [2007-08-02 01:02:46 +0000 UTC]

Well, it would really be best to create a new one instead of trying to make the existing pattern bigger. How big of one are you needing?

That's a nice set of drawings you got there. How come there were never any cute looking hybrid vampire/werewolf chicks when I was growing up?

Thanks for sharing.
