Description I put a rush on this costume to get it complete in time for the last weekend of Ren Fest. I left off a few things (like leather work and the additional brooches) in leiu of time. It's a little dirty, but no worse for the wear. Design sketch found here.

Gauze, and silk, and two unknowns (the underskirt and sleeve). I'm not ridiculously thrilled with the pattern I drafted, but I had bought the last 5 yards of silk noil for the overdress and had to make due. It's very comfortable to wear, and the drawers made visits to the privy easy.

I can't think of much else at the moment. I may edit later.

That's beautiful! Very simple, with the elegent sleeve.... well actually both sleeves are elegant. ^_^ But the pretty brocade one is just so... pretty! Very sweet and simple, a casual "ooh, I'm just from the little village over the way, but I've kept quite clean and pretty and I'm fair enough with a bow". I love this dress the more that I look at it. It hangs so nicely, too. Well on the manequin anyway, I can hardly even think what that'd look like on a living, breathing human being.

... unless you're an elf?

-=attempts to look at one's ears sans mirror=- Uhm...not that I know of. -=smirk=- But then, I have a lot of hair that covers these things.

I'll see about getting a picture in the whole thing.

That's seriously neat. Even if it hadn't been functional, it would have been interesting. Knowing that it is useful as well as beautiful....well that's a serious bonus.

Brilliant work.

This is amazing! Tho I don't often comment, I am a huge fan of your costume work, and this is really great! When I first saw the sketch I couldn't wait to see the finished product. It's a really intriguing design, which I think is quite practical for archery (tho obviously not battle). You've done a great job and I love the colour combos! I can't wait to see how it looks when you take it further.

Thank you so much! I'm anxious to get the leather work done, but I'm going to force myself to take my time and get help from a friend who does exquisite leatherwork. Maybe I'll even venture into embossing...ooh...I'm getting ideas now!

Gorgeous! I love the a-symmetry and the skirt layers. Is the sleeve a brocade?

Yes, I think it's a chenille base, with a poly blend weave, but the tag at the store didn't really say, so that's just my best guess. I wanted the whole of the overdress to be that, but it was a bit out of my budget, so I settled for the accent sleeve.

If I shot in that... those sleeves would drive me nuts... I think i'd have to roll them up as pretty as they are, and watch out for those folds when you draw back! I've gotten my skirts stuck in between the string and the limb so many times... it's embarassing, having them get flipped up like that.

Are you actually going to be shooting? I know at our Ren fair they've got archery, but I've not been in probably six years... and that was before I was really interested in archery.

I'm sorry /.\ Ya sound kind of annoyed, I didn't mean to be offensive or.. incredibly stupid if it sounded that way. My bow is about as tall as I am, a bit shorter strung, and I pull back straight across my body... anything sticking out will catch, any sleeves, let alone sleeves that have been rolled up and stick out get caught... even my chest gets nicked without a guard... Plus, I guess I jus kinda got off track and started thinkin like, when I shoot I normally shoot around three hundred arrows, so the chances that my dress would get caught or something... probably a lot higher...

I'm sorreh, ya said it was an archer dress an I kinda focused in on that rather than the fair I suppose, it is supposed to be fun, I'm just bitter about that and kind of.. subconciously ignore all references to it I think because I don't have the money to go... lol So yeah, I'm sorry again... didn't mean anything.

Ok, a couple of things. Like I said in my comment, I didn't do the leather work. It's on the design sketch, but I didn't have the time, or desire at current, to do it. When I shoot, I shoot left handed, and at Festival today, I did fine. The bell sleeve is on the drawing hand, hence it doesn't get in the way. The poofy sleeve, was folded up to my elbow and wasn't in the way at all. I had designed a bracer and arm band to hold it down but haven't made it yet, hence the 'Complete for now' in the title.

Not sure why you're getting skirts stuck in your bow. The bow I use isn't nearly long enough to catch on my skirts, but that also accounts for the belt and strap to hold the overdress back. I titled it Archer dress because that's what the original design was called. It's one of those dresses that is meant to be fun to wear, pretty in a simple way, and mildly functional. If I were to have to go into 'battle', I'd definately be in tights and a doublet. C'mon, how many people go to Festival with the intent of being completely serious and practical? Festival is for fun! It's whimsy and entertainment wrapped up in a tankard of hard cider!

This years archery score: 6/6 bull's eyes.

Wow...i wish i could make something like that

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FenigDurak In reply to Mjulinir [2005-08-01 05:31:22 +0000 UTC]

It was actually really easy. I used a Simplicity corset pattern, and a standard skirt pattern (doubled on the panels though for fullness), and then combiend the two together for the overdress. The sleeve is just half of a bell sleeved shirt pattern.
