Description
When doing the Griffith photoshoot, of course that we had to recreate the infamous scratching scene - and DISCLAIMER, before you get any funny ideas: no, the scratches ain't real, they're just a very convincing special effect edited in by Tenshi .
The scratching scene strikes me as an important character establishing moment for Griffith - and for once, I actually prefer the movie version over how it was handled in the manga/TV anime. In the manga and the TV adaptation, the scene takes place the morning after Griffith's unfortunate encounter with Count Gendo. In the movie, Griffith gets to scratch himself immediately after the night with the princess, sitting next to sleeping Charlotte and angsting over Guts. The difference may seem subtle, but it's there: in the manga/TV anime, Griffith is disgusted by what he has done, or more precisely, what has been done to him. In the movie, we see a man deeply disturbed by what he IS - it's no longer a moment of recovering after a difficult decision, it's a point of facing his own weakness and realizing he's only human.
And that makes those scratch marks burn all the more.
Here's a link to a great AMV based on Metallica's "Unforgiven", with Guts suffering and Griffith being all creepy, just the way I like them: www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvYopx…
