Trying to work with backgrounds for a change and my lineart here is actually more sketchy and free then I usually allow myself to get away with. xD I wanted to focus on coloring and lighting effects here, so I tried not to let the lineart distract me from that too much.
I also wanted to show off Shay's back fin and a little more of her new design work. She's more fish like now. :3
Lotsa references used for the shells and I'm still only sort of happy with her face. Her lips I could have afforded to move a bit and such, but like I said, I wanted to focus on coloring. xD Took some work to pry myself away from the lines to get to work on things like makeup, which is my first attempt here too.
Total time: 2-3 days off and on. A recreation from an old piece I found kicking around in my sketch book.

Originally I had such big ideas, haha, I wanted coral reefs, more bubbles and to make it altogether more sparkly, but doing up the rocks where hard enough when I didn't know what I was doing, haha! I'm glad I still managed to make it look pretty though C=

The background is incredible and it doesn't detract any attention from Shayoko which is awesome. I love the little details you put into the piece it gives it that little extra umph. One thing though that I find awkward is that because of the effects on her skin you don't get to see to much of your shading/highlighting. It's difficult to decipher what is effect and what's not. I love how you added shading to everything though from the little things like her anklet and the beads on her top to her ocean floor shadow. It gives everything more depth.
I really like the floaty effect everything has especially her hair. One thing I'm curious about though it's what is her hair bands made out of? They look metal to me but I dunno. ^^
Oh and I think the make up came out great. It's not loud, but not to subtle so no one would notice it.

Haha, that's good, I remember when I was working on it I was getting a little worried that all the background workings would take away from the character.
And shhh. The details on the skin was suppose to HIDE the fact that I was lazy on it's shading. >.> <.< I'm glad the water reflections are noticeable too though, for the longest time I really wasn't satisfied with them. The hardest thing in this piece was trying to make her look like she was actually in water without flattening out the whole thing. xD
Her hair bands? o.O I think originally they were suppose to be metal, which, now that I think about it, you're right. xD They should be sinking, not floating. I'll just be a bum and say they're made of something lighter for now though. Make up was fun!

I think it might be cheaper to have it done by like, staples or something. xD D.A. is massively greedy for their print shop stuff and tends to overprice a little for my tastes.

Ah...don't know why, but it always calms me when I look at sea creatures (in this case, a sea nymph or mermaid). Water and me always kinda had a keen relationship...wonder why...
