Well, if I recall heavily modified M1 was a prototype for M14.

I carried one in combat in 1972.
Helluva fine battle rifle.
Mine had a 3x9 Redfield auto ranging scope simply focus and shoot. No need for extreme math problems. National match quality and precision.
Back then it was known as the XM21. X stood for experimental. Know it's the M21.
We guaranteed kills to 800 meters.
It's one of my favorite video game rifles too.π

Most folks are familiar with the M24 bolt action. A Remington BDL five round bolt action. It had a longer range out to 1200 meters. Gas auto reload versus bolt action. The gas recoil robbed some of the velocity of the bullet where the bolt action kept it all there. It was only a difference of a few hundred feet per second but enough to drop the max range BUT the M21 had 20 rounds of those 7.62 versus 5 and it was magazine fed. You just lined up, squeeze, line up another, squeeze and just keep going till you ran out of ammo or tangos! A story from Vietnam (not me) was a Marine sharpshooter using the M21 with the Starlight night scope. Pre FLIR and night vision of today. He took out 18 NVA crossing a river trying to flank his unit. Starlight only saw about 100 meters. His shots ranged between 25 and 80. One shot one kill. 18 times. Then he got out of there. I believe it was all done in less than 20 seconds.
The joys of auto reloading!
His story was on the Military Channel about Snipers.
I can attest to picking off a target then another quickly using this weapon.
No joy in killing but it was my job at the time. The most I got was six before I had to duck. They were all now shooting at me! 250 was now 244 but I was working on that!π The other grunts joined in reducing their numbers further. One of a few attacks our firebase weathered.
I was taught if you do something do it the best you can.
The civilian model of the M14 is the M1A by Springfield Armory.
