Description Another robot character of mine from a scifi story I started writing a few years ago.

Iris is a Skeeter class tactical military robot specializing in surgical strikes, as well as hit and runaways. These quadruped machines are extremely mobile, able to climb and traverse rugged terrain, leap long distances, and "skate" across even surfaces, striking key military targets with superhuman precision. Skeeters can be equipped with a variety of light, medium, and heavy weaponry--in some instances even weapons slightly more unwieldy to humans. Weighing over 600 pounds and able to move at speeds of up to 40 mph while skating, Skeeters are a formidable foe against enemy squads, and they are the preferred line of defense against Foo Fighters--which are an enigmatic, sometimes hostile presence encountered in the Corbett Cluster.

Iris works closely with Commander Stallone and Doctor Lexi of the Swan Brigade at Morne Base One where they are stationed at the ready to defend a fuel supply line. She has a personality of her own and works hard to protect Stallone and his troops. Being the only Skeeter stationed on Morne Base, the members of the Swan Brigade know her and trust her with fondness. She shows herself to be content among the troops and other robots on Morne Base, and seems to recognize each one.

In this story (tentatively called The Ghost Algorithm) modern robots are considered life forms with fluid intelligence and autonomy, equipped with semantics, emotions, and instincts to help them survive and do their useful work--which they are content to do. They are not human-like, however, even in intelligence or emotion, but they are created to work with and be personal with humans. They understand human intent when spoken to, but they have very limited or no speech of their own. They communicate more like pets, you might say.

Robots of modern design have also long been deemed to be machines with the capacity of life worthy to be treated with a degree of dignity.

I had a lot of fun thinking up this story. I've always loved neat robots.

Yeah. His stories are great. One of my favorites is the one with the robot pet dog and the boy.

I remember that one, fantastic. My favs are 'Christmas in Ganymede' and the one of the ghost that sues a road constructing company so they don't tear down the shack where he lives!

He wrote some good stuff. I finally was able to read I, Robot in high school when I found the book in the library. I wasnt able to finish it then, as studying (and a loud library which no one could do anything about) kept me from concentrating.

I also read a bit of Ray Bradbury during that time. The Martian Chronicals and Something Wicked this Way Comes kept me quite intrigued!

I think I have the full robot collection among my e-books, let me check.

Ray Bradbury, for me, was not a writer but a poet in prose: his Martian Chronicles is among the most beautiful books ever. Mom wasn't a big fan, as SF is concerned... and she loved Martian Chronicles! nevertheless, I must state that the movie adaptation doesn't do justice to the splendid prose Bradbury wrote.

I agree, thats kind of what I felt when I read his work. I also really enjoyed his short stories.

You know I got to shake his hand?

He gave a speech several years back. He had a very interesting life story and I saw his writing take on much personal meaning to his creativity as well as his speech unfolded. Afterward he did a book signing. I thanked him for the great speech and he signed two books, one for me and another for my uncle. My father captured the moment of the handshake in a photograph from a distance.

Its a highlight in my life. The other, shaking hands with the heart surgeon who saved my grandpa's life.

*More drool*

The most close I have been to a writer was ehan an university classmate devoted to write; regrettably, he was a radical leftist, something quite dangerous at the time, with a no less radically retaliatory government. He eventually Β left the university and went to Spain.

Truth to be told, his writings were boring to the max, at least for me.

Ah, yes.

Id like to read some of what you would have to write someday. Especially for Monique and company on their adventures.

You will. What has me stuck (at least in the initial tale) is why Noctula is found drunk as a skunk in the worst tavern of Albatross Cove, the place where Mitt and Articus eventually steal the airship that will be the future Albatross..
of couyrse, one arc could be the origin of Mittermacht McCaw as a steamborg and Articus loyal sidekick.

Well, actually they look more like the other race of Master of Orion III (since Meklars were for what I remember more 'evil' race)... Actually I didn't like MOO3 for one thing: they didn't include feline Msshar and avian Alkari. But when I'm getting a better PC, I'll be getting the remake of Master of Orion due to all being present. :3
