Description
Nekoda is a “Koquora.” A fey creature resembling a reptile. He appears in one of my Trail of the Enchantress stories called Fell Moon.

Koquora are rare in the world, and by the time Nekoda is around, they in danger of dying out.

An eon ago, the Koquora and ancient men (humans) were close friends. The first Koquora were said to have journeyed to the world by running in herds across the seas out from the “First Horizon,” when the waters of the world were being separated from the land. Men saw these creatures as being able to run across the seas like it was earth, without falling under. Thus, one of the first names men called them was “Sea Striders.”

In ancient times when man lived primitively in the world, koquora would be birthed by surrogate human mothers, though conceived among Koquora mates by magic—always to mothers who were deemed infertile. This was usually precessed by a visitation or strange but non threatening encounter with some kind of fairy spirit. The Koquora would grow and live and work and love as one of the family, but would live many years longer than their parents and eventually migrate to the enchanted wilds. Many humans considered this a blessing and an honor, but after time when humans began to see themselves as more independent from other created things, birthing a Koquora became something perceived as strange, which beget feelings of disgust in further generations, which in turn beget a stigma put on those who were chosen to birth them, and the Koquora themselves. Thus, the Koquora had no choice but to distance themselves, electing surrogate mothers more selectively, sometimes surviving centuries without children in hopes the stigma would be forgotten.

Nekoda was born from a young widow named Iruthe. Her village thought her an abomination once it was discovered her child was a Koquora and they sought to bring her to trial to determine if she was dangerous. Iruthe left Nekoda in the care of a man named Arim, a kind old hermit who was in truth not a man at all but the manifestation of a benign haunt over a marsh. There, Nekoda grew up along with Dokori, a female Koquora whom Arim had hopes might become his life mate as they grew.

Nekoda, like most of his kind, is an adventurous spirit, sprightly, amiable, and harmonious. As a younger Koquora he shows such adventurism he is seemingly fearless, regardless of how accident prone he is. He later develops an overt sense of justice and is not afraid to withhold mercy from creatures who would seek to do him harm. This sense of defense is magnified with feeling of pride once he learns his people are at risk of extinction, and for a phase he goes too far with new and older friendships, distancing himself sadly from others. The phase doesn’t last forever though, it’s part of his self discovery you might say.

Nekoda by far, however, makes a name for himself as someone governed by joy, humor, chivalry, and even on some occasions a sense of flirtiness, though he balances flattery with courtesy and honor.
