6-20-04 edit.. the colorwork was rushed & sloppy, so swapped ot out with the original b&w illiustration5-23-05 edit- had added a bit/reworked the original a few months back, and just got off the duff and scanned it.

this is the main craft you fly in the game Ikaruga, a vertically scrolling shmup
I played around with the idea of boxart design and used the concept as a cheap excuse to draw the ship :3... i've been fascinated by the ship 's design as of late,it wasn't until i did the fanart when i really got to understand its design.. this was a very fun project! -pencil & photoshop..

Nifty artwork, I like the details. The moon in the background adds coolness, too. Everyone would have to use reference sheets and art from the game to grasp how to draw the ship well.
Ahh, Ikaruga...I love you so. Sadly, I have only played it for a short time. I don't have the game, so I will have to hunt it down at a used game store somewhere...

man, i got lucky, and during one of my searches, i bumped into some official illustrations of the ship, including a couple detail sketches of some of the more involved components, so it proved to be an invaluable resource

Did you draw that in pencil? Only in pencil? I ask because I mainly use pencil, and I want to get better.

yeah, i think this one was done with a mech pencil, a 4B pencil (softer lead), and a blending stump i had, sharp highlights were added with kneaded erasers and an electric eraser ^^
a good way to help build your pencilling skills is to preactice working with varying pressure on the paper while drawing.. its a very versatile tool

I get brain overload playing that game. Its the most insane thing I have ever played and it is still a chalenge even after having it for a year. By the way, beautiful pic of the ship, probably one of the best so far!

Hmmm . . . have you tried drawing the wingman's aircraft?
On a side note, two player Ikaruga is a thing of beauty, especially if you get two players who work really well with each other. I've not actually seen this happen, but I know the potential's there.

actually was thinking about drawing the ginkei, but man the ikaruga was a pure pain in the butt to render right.. all thos lil jiblets.. decent construtional refs are very difficult to find.. especially ginkei oy...
side not- i'd really like to see that, for i'm horrible playing 2 player with shmups.. one ship can be red & the other blue & i'll STILL confuse them & run into things like a buffoon... once you get two ships that swtich between black & white shielding, you might as well stick a fork in there
