[Part 1 of an MLP Reimagining AU]

Growing up in a small mining town, Rarity watched the adults in her life work hard each day to provide food and a warm home for their loved ones. Each day her own father toiled away to dig up rare gems and jewels, coming home late at night only to do it all again the moment the sun rose. As she got older, she watched this work weigh more and more heavily on him, and, after the early passing of her mother, it was up to her to mend her father's work clothes and keep the home running for him and her baby sister.

Rarity had always loved to sew and knew that her special talent would somehow incorporate tailoring, though when she initially came to that realization, she was surprised when no cutie mark appeared. It wasn't until her father came home one night, coughing and sore and sick, did Rarity take a trip up to the mines herself, and in a surge of magic spurred on by her generosity and the power of the Sonic Rainboom, she discovered the gem-summoning spell that made the lives of both her father and all the town's fellow miners so much easier. Her cutie mark appeared as she was suddenly gazing upon every gem and jewel in the tunnel, and, entranced by their beauty, she realized that it was not simply tailoring she adored, but fashion. Her cutie mark is a golden sewing needle surrounded by diamonds, a representation not only of her skill at sewing, but her own personal style.

Now, Rarity's father is older, and though his years of hard work in the mines has worsened his health in the long run, he is able to relax thanks to the monthly letters he gets from her- always containing a heartfelt note and plenty of gold to get by. She also took in Sweetie Belle, and the two of them visit their father often. Rarity has had multiple relationships with mares and stallions alike, including Fancypants, Soarin, Fleur de Lis, and even Sapphire Shores, but none of them lasted more than a few months due to their respective careers pulling them in different directions. She's still looking for her special somepony, and has recently started seeing Braeburn. Time will tell if the new relationship works out, but she's not giving up until she finds the kind of love her parents had. Rarity also identifies as agender- she uses she/her pronouns because she finds them to be the most glamorous, but she personally does not identify with any gender identity.

Rarity and Sweetie Belle are Legacy Unicorns, a rare type of unicorn that have solid white coats, a traditional unicorn tail, and cloven hooves, and are often taller than most other ponies. Legacy Unicorns also have curved horns, a trait they only share with Alicorns. Though ancient stories of Legacy Unicorns would have one believe otherwise, they are not inherently more powerful than the Standard Unicorns that have pegasus or earth pony lineage in their family tree. In fact, the combination of earth and sky magic within a Standard Unicorn often makes them better mages. Unlike Standards, Legacies' magical power is tied to the lunar cycle, making them more powerful during a full moon, but noticeably weaker during a new moon. There are certain spells only Legacies can perform, Rarity's gem summoning spell being one of those. Twilight cannot perform Rarity's signature spell until Twilight ascends to Alicorn status.
