Description Despite the fact that I knew where I was headed on this roller coaster ride of a day, I never expected to bump into this!! That morning I was white knuckling the wheel of my Honda Civic as I traversed on roads that were not made for such cars while the skies let loose their fury in the form of a pretty nasty March snowstorm. That afternoon found me driving through Utah, attempting to find Arizona, through patches of the leftover storm. I crested a hill and nearly drove off the road when I saw the spread of Monument Valley beneath me. I had NO idea I was on that particular road or that I would get to see one of the most iconic places in the U.S.

Monument Valley is located in Utah, right along the Arizona border, closer to the eastern end of the two states. When I arrived, a patch of leftover storm was dumping its remains to the east, the left hand side there. After passing Canyonlands and Arches National Parks, and then this, I knew that one day I'd have to return to those sections of Utah prepared for some desert photography. I still have to manage to do that one day, but I'm in no rush. At least I can take comfort in knowing that I got to see this, surprise though it was! © 2012-Current.

The weather you;ve captured in this over the stunning landscape is really cool, especially seeming it came as a suprise to you to be there.

Yep! It was completely unplanned. And that's fine by me, considering how it made the idea of seeing this iconic valley so much more striking!

That's a beautiful shot of the rainfall. A sight I remember well from living out west!

Thank you! It was actually partly snowing over there. I had stopped a little while back in a small desert town for gas and it was completely coated in snow. Nobody knew what to do. I grabbed a coffee at the gas station and this little old lady was terrified for me to be driving out in the weather they were having. I had to explain that I was from NY and that the sprinkling of snow they were getting was nothing in my eyes.

It's incredible, isn't it? I had similar experiences in TX, where I attended grad school for the first time. Once, when I arrived on campus, people laughed at me. Classes were canceled! What was I doing there? I inquired why classes had been canceled. It was because there were patches of ice on the road. Sure enough, on the way home, I saw someone spin out on one that was barely larger than the car itself!

That is so typical! Well, in their defense, they have no ice melt down there and nobody probably owns a shovel, so it's not a surprise. They also probably never learned to drive on the stuff so there's no big shock when they can't drive on it properly.

Nope. None of that snow-managing stuff. I also found that many people imagined the Northeast as covered with snow most of the year.

They do. A person on here, from Texas, thinks that it's on lockdown for something like three months out of the year.

Unless "nestled away" not only means tucked away somewhere but also gigantically expansive. Haha

I meant I thought it was in a park somewhere. Not just out in the middle of nowhere. Glad it is, though.

It was really quite an amazing sight. I was so lucky to just happen to be on that road. I always thought Monument Valley was nestled away somewhere. Not so much!
