i just saw this photo and it's so sad. i searched him on wikipedia and read that after coming home and going through rehab and all the surgery he had, he married his sweetheart, it was a really strong story, and then i read that they seperated. no matter what the reason was, it makes this even sadder, with what he's gone through but now he's lost his wife. very strong moment to capture and with the flags and the emotion you can see that it has, it makes this photo even more meaningful.

I really hate to say this, but I knew the first time I saw the wedding photos that they would not be together forever. I hate to say it, but I could see it all over her, in her eyes. Their official wedding photo was the saddest I've ever seen.
The government and the media made them front page news -- poster children for wounded veterans, and when that happened, she had to stay until they were no longer in the spotlight. A bad, bad situation for all. It's too bad he had to go through that horrible event. Him and so many others.

While I agree with the conceptual aspect in which you are trying to portray I still stand firm in the believe that free will is a gift given to everyone and this man received the brunt end of his choices.
I have a friend in Iraq and from what he has told me there is quite a bit of deaths that simply happen in construction accidents like people getting electrocuted due to not knowing when the power is to be turned on, or individuals getting crushed by defective machinery.
This man apparently is one of the unfortunate ones - but these things are meant to happen if one is to involve one's self in a selfish war lead by the most blind.
Plato once wrote, "One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors."
And I hate corporations as much as the next guy but, didn't that man sacrifice himself for the freedoms of the common man....freedoms such as the freedom of speech to bitch about their lattes?
Just a thought.

FideNullo In reply to stellar-insight [2008-01-15 04:47:55 +0000 UTC]
People have tried to make the "free will" point before, saying things like, "Well, if he didn't want to get blown up, he shouldn't have joined the military," and that argument is complete bullshit. Nobody joins the military because they want to get blown up. They join for many reasons -- money for college; to stay out of jail; patriotism; to get out of an otherwise shitty life; legacy -- but no-one joins because they just know they're going to get blown up. But no matter what the reason, because he and thousands of others did join, it isn't required that you join. Remember that.
The vast majority of the troops in Iraq disagree with the war. They don't want to be there at all, but there they are. You can't include them in the "selfish war" argument. They are pawns, who's lives are being wasted by crooked chess masters. The two camps must be separated.
I never said it was against the law to bitch about your lattΓ© -- if it works for you, go ahead -- but I'd like to see you raise hell about it to this guy if he were in line next to you at Starbucks. In fact, I'd pay for that seat.
Cheers.

You Americans are so funny, really. Talking about free will, freedom and freedom of speech. You don't have it! Don't you realise that your own government is holding you prison? You censor TV. Only that makes it no free speech but you think you have it anyway. The land of the free you say? Yeah! When you are scared to be stopped by a cop. It's more likely he shoots you than a criminal. Police can walk in to your house without a reason (they have the right). The thing that you are against free medical help for everyone just show how low intelligent some Americans are!
America needs to stop being the world police and mind their own problems, because they have more than enough.
I loved America, I wanted to live there, I wanted to have a life there but that was before I realised how fucked up it is there.
Saying "if he didn't want to get blown up, he shouldn't have joined the military," is so fucked up he should be slapped. But one thing bothers me. Soldiers that say "I don't want to be here. What are we doing here?". What did you expect when you joined the military? Sitting on a hill having a picknick and shooting clays? No, if you joined it's your job so deal with it!
However, I have great respect for the armed forces and Marines are with out a doubt one of the best in the world. I have great respect for people within the military and this picture sends a good message.

Do you really think it's fair to group 300 million people into your one opinion of how we all think? Are you really so wise to think that the USA is the ONLY country that harbors any ignorance in its population?
It's just as ignorant to actually apply stereotypes to every single one of a people. Tell me, do you also think all Texans wear cowboy hats and ride horses every day? Do you think that all French people smoke and don't bathe? Do you think that all Irish people are alcoholics? Tell me, are all Asians bad drivers? Do all black people crave watermelon and fried chicken? Are all arabs terrorsts? Stop me when I reach the limit of your wisdom.

My main point concerning your description/photo was rights. Look, what I'm saying is don't promote and glorify the people who put their lives on the line to protect rights and then in your description imply suppression of those rights by telling people to shut up. Yeah, I hate it when people bitch about lattes too, but I'm not going to tell the to shut up - its hypocrisy.
Rights have amazing flexibility and they can be the best thing on your side or a privilege you wish others didn't have - its a matter of context.
Please keep context in mind before accusing people of saying soldiers go to war to get blown up (I never stated it) and that a person is a Starbucks local (even after mentioning the distaste for major corporations).
And please don't insult my intelligence about not being required to go - I am very well away of this, it was a right given to me by Congress in 1973 when the military draft was abolished.
Once again...its about rights.
Thanks for understanding this time around. This is not meant to provoke - only clarify.

The point is that people shouldn't be so whiny and bitchy about everyday things when it could be so much worse. I'm not "suppressing" anyone -- I'm merely speaking out against douchebaggery. Consider it a public service.

I agree, but isn't it sad that those who bitch and whine are beyond people like those of untouchables, in this day in age they're unteachables - its a strange disease of the 21st century.

Alright, all you people could say what you want about or anything pertaining to the war. I have no voice in that, and I haven't any interest in debating my beliefs with anyone, whether he or she is a jackass OR a well-mannered person.
This picture isn't ABOUT the war. You don't see "War" or "Iraq" in the title. Hell, it's not even in the artist's comments. It's about a guy who lost his face doing what "his country" sent him to do. And I'm not going to say that "It's the governments fault", or "Bush's fault", because I don't see the Seargant there bitching about. If he, the VICTIM, someone who, of all people, SHOULD bitch, isn't complaining about it, for what moral reason do I have to do so?
See, that's why I hate debates about the war. Because usually, it's just pointing fingers. Ultimately, it's personal ethics and a little bit of philosophy; it's something you should voice, NOT debate. Otherwise, you're trying to change people; it's POINTLESS.
"Sacrifice". I'm sorry, I really am. It kills me that he had to live through it, and if I could, I'd share his pain. Unfortunately, I'm nothing but human.
What's impressive, to me, is that he chose to live, even after losing what he did. It takes a strong spirit to do that.

Art-n-Coffee In reply to Kyu-Chang88 [2009-02-17 14:13:01 +0000 UTC]
He doesnt bitch because it was his duty and his sacrifice and he has honor... the only thing bad is they are sent in for what? what IS the point to this war? When they come home they get nothing. I live with a veteran that broke his back in the war severely. hes in chronic pain can barely walk and he goes to the VA hospital and they shit all over him and everyone else in there thats worse off then him... I respect people for going to war to serve and protect our country. But I am saddened by how they are treated at home.neglected medically and then given no respect or given stupid frivolous stuff that is supposed to show how their actions were appreciated... this will show some of it, look through the pics.
