Oh yes, it's been in movies before. You probably saw it in "Contact".

This is amazing...the depth that is created by the sweeping movement of the cloud and the haze at the far distance, is...wow...the b/w also add to the composition...good job!

Been there..took a few shots..maybe I should post them.

I like this shot...it shows the openness of the place.

Did they move them while you were there?

B.

Yes, they did in fact move them a few times. It was pretty cool!

I like the black and white, how the clouds look so soft - they also look as though they are travelling across the sky rather quickly. I like how the main focus is on the lower left and looking slightly out from the photo.

I'd have been inclined to put it in the right corner because of the way it's 'looking'. but it's still a very cool B&W shot
As other people have mentioned, it does remind me of Contact

FideNullo In reply to jimmahh [2005-08-14 03:27:41 +0000 UTC]

I agree, but there were no dramatic clouds to the left of it. I wasn't even going to include this shot in the list of "finals" on this project, just because the dish's direction annoys me, but every time someone saw it, they said how much they loved it. So, I let popular opinion sway me on its inclusion. It's turned out to be the favorite VLA shot of everyone but me.

Should have phoned up the VLA control center and asked them to swing it round for a minute, it is on wheels
If they'd complained that you're asking too much, you could have simply pointed out you were trying to avoid having to have the weather moved
While it's a pity about how the dish is pointing out of frame, the single isolated dish makes for a more striking image (especially with those clouds) than the other one of the whole array, where the dishes are pointing the 'right' way

It has a very surreal vibe probably because of the contrast on the clounds and of the subject, the photo reminds me of a dream I had, so more points Excellent work.

good god, its beautiful. almost like a message, something about the future and killer robots. the clouds are killer though. polarizer, right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FideNullo In reply to thefro [2004-07-30 23:12:18 +0000 UTC]

lol! Thanks for the kind words, man! Actually, the image was shot on Kodak E100VS color chrome film, with no polarizer. The blue in the sky was incredibly saturated, and when I converted it to gray, it was naturally very dark. I really liked the effect, so I just juiced the contrast a little more and gave it a square crop, which I thought worked way better...

Thanks again!

Thanks, Mick! You really like this one better? I just slapped it up on dA for the hell of it, really. I didn't even expect anyone to comment on it. I wanted to put one more from the Array set online, and this was my first runner up to VLA ...

mickr7an In reply to FideNullo [2004-07-26 06:49:40 +0000 UTC]

I still think the other one is great but there's something extra in this that I like.

There seems to be a narrative element to it. There's this one singular dish looking directly up to the heavens. It actually looks like it's in the middle of a conversation. All around it is just earth and sky. That brings across the vastness of 'space' and how small we are in the universe... which is why the dish is there in the first place. It reminds me a bit of the iMac ads if you saw them. They made the head of the computer look like the head of person. It had personality, I think this singular composition has the same quality.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mickr7an In reply to FideNullo [2004-07-26 09:45:52 +0000 UTC]

Pretty cool and pretty weird. It would be more specific to say I live in Shanghai as it's very different to the rest of China. I better give you some top line stuff to start off with or I will bore you to death. The good stuff - futuristic city with magnetic leviation trains and buildings that would look at home in an old Flash Gordon episode. Food, man I've put on a lot of wiehgt since I got here. All anybody does here is eat, eat, eat. Cheap beer. About 50 cents for a pint bottle of good US or Japanese beer. Cheap everything. The people are mad and loud and in your face so you don't have to worry about insulting anyone. The women are beautiful and very forward. I've been propositioned dozens of times (at first I thought they were hookers but they're just looking to date a foreigner). One nutty girl tried to pick me up in the queue in the bank, she wanted to come home and see my photographs - "she stole my line". The bad stuff - loud day and night, dirty, people spitting everywhere, it takes some time to get used to it. Western things are very expensive. I haven't had cheese or cream since I got here. Starbucks costs the same as anywhere else which is expensive living on what you make here. What I'd give for a fajita with sour cream right now. And finally like any city on the rise everyone is on the make and trying to rip each other off. But I love it here.

Wow, that sounds exciting and scary, at the same time. I guess I can combine those two into "exhilarating" and make more sense! How is the general attitude toward westerners? Do you ever get hassled?

Oh, I almost forgot... I took this for you, last night at dinner. Fajita Taco!

You can't beat South Texas Fajitas!

Attitudes vary but are mostly advantageous.

Everyone: foreigner = millionaire

Shanghai men: foreigner = possible freind and drinking companion, who knows a lot about making money.

Shanghai women: foreigner = possible mate and will approach you in pubs or banks and ask for dates and if they marry you life will be full of riches.

Peasants: foreigner = selling opportunity or chance to say 'hello' and then laugh hysterically at foreinger no matter how he reacts. footnote: I dont understand it and niether does anyone from Shanghai. But you are a millionaire so you should buy something or just give them money.

Taxi drivers: foreigner = someone to say 'eh' to loudly no matter how good their Chinese pronunciation is and then when their wife finally repeats it exactly the same suddenly understand where they want to go.

Crazy old woman in my building: foreigner = opportunity to talk becasue no one else will. "surely everyone on the entire planet speaks fluent Chinese? No matter how many times he protests I will keep asking him questions, all the way to the 22nd floor. Every f'n day!"

haha well technically he was an alien, but just in the guise of her father, so she didn't get all freaky and psyched out...even though she went in prepared to see god knows what and that would have probably freaked her out less than seeing her dead father...but oh well. Movies are flawed what can you do. and UGH for as a preemptory warning do NOT see King Arthur.

I thought they did a fairly decent job of sticking with what we now know, historically. Embellishments are to be expected. I did have some issues with Guinevere, though...
