He is devastated because his brother is dead, and because he had hated his brother, but he was told Itachi was actually a good person, trying to protect sasuke.

well the Uchiha clan had been planning a coup on the village, but even though Itachi was an Uchiha, and his father was the head of the coup, Itachi protested it and was chosen by the 3rd Hokage to slaughter the entire Clan. he did, and he killed his parents, best friend, and girlfriend, but the only person he could not kill.....was his little brother Sasuke. Sasuke most of his life without knowing the truth, and was devastated when he was finally told about it from Madara Uchiha (aka Tobi), who had helped Itachi in the massacre.
