Description
Director David Hartman really wanted to get involved in the design of this creature, so I gave his designs of Zander Barcalow's early mutation stages to CG house Foundation Imaging.I focused on this final transformation, jumping off from roughs by David, I worked with my Australian team of designers, Darren Roach being one of them, he did this cleanup of my rough and the final digital colors.
It was decided to keep a human complexion to his skin and blue eyes, we had earlier color treatments that were more bug-like which were rejected.

Yeah it's wasn't my choice, but I'm okay with it. I had him all bug in the original coloring.

Oh my gosh it's Zander Buggggg!!!! 
Oh man, this guy is just my favorite. 
This brings back memories of watching the DVDs, seeing the show for the first time in like a decade.... and just loving the fact that even though this version of Zander appeared for only one episode, the creators still poured such amazing imagination and care and detail into his nightmarishly awesome design.

I will confess that my only regret is that I never got a chance to pull the CG model of Zander into the house style, it was a big fight to get the main cast into the same stylistic universe. Trust me, he could have looked much more interesting as a character. But I had to move on to the bugs which were desperately needing my help.

Oh god! Not more of these bugs!! Seriously, how many of them are there!? Its like they have unlimited variations lol. If the face on this one wasn't extremely ugly, i would say he looks very cool but thats not the case lol

Seeing this makes my mind jump off to the episode this form appeared in, where we saw the imposter bug (and it's dissection) and the inside of the nest with nurse bugs tending the young. Stuff like that was my favorite, how this fictional society/species worked.

Yes all bugs I have the designs for, they all worked out really well in the show.

One concept I really liked was how instead of Terraforming planets they would "bug-form" the local species to take advantage of the local fauna's adaptation to the planet.
