Well, I've been completely obsessed with Klonoa these past few days. Have a drawing of a character from the series. I should probably point out that the rest of this description will spoil everything but the last minute or so of Klonoa 2.

King of Sorrow (or "KoS" as I often call him, because it being homophonous to "coz" amuses me) is the sole inhabitant of Hyuponia (AKA Kingdom of Sorrow), one of the five kingdoms of Lunatea. Each kingdom embodies a sort of characteristic or emotion: indecisiveness or tranquility, for example, and those within the kingdom experience almost nothing but what it embodies. To the knowledge of most, Lunatea only houses four kingdoms, as that of Sorrow was rejected and forgotten.

Cue Klonoa 2. To put it briefly, KoS sets up the game's entire plotline in an attempt to reunite his kingdom with the others, wishing to no longer be the sole inhabitant of Hyuponia, experiencing all of the world's sorrow for himself. Everything goes according to plan until Klonoa's gang shuts the operation down at the last moment and throws it all right back in his face, at which point KoS stops caring about anything and attacks, not knowing what else to do. Between fights, all he can do is weep, lamenting how even his peaceful attempt at rejoining the world is met with such harsh rejection.

Pretty cheerful story, isn't it? I'm not sure if the game tries to portray him in a sympathetic light or not, to be honest. I quite liked him, myself, even with what little screentime he got. He's one of those antagonists that are more a victim than anything else, and he doesn't even act maliciously until you meet him in person just to say "screw you" to his face. It's not as if he's trying to exact revenge for what the world had done to him - he's just trying to be accepted, and he doesn't have any other way to react aside from anger once he's so strongly denied even that. Hell, his eyes are even a rather unsettling red, presumably from shedding tears so much. This is a case where it's actually safe to say that the "villain" could really just use a freakin' hug. All he wants is to not be hated, isn't it?

Damn do I love the Klonoa series, and damn do I wish that the King of Sorrow got a little more attention.
