Thank you! I thought so for a long time as well. But if you get into it, it is not that hard at all. What you need is patience and some abilities in three-dimensional thinking. I did not start with sewing complicated patterns, though. Β It is a steady learning by doing process (and sometimes learning by failure...).

I had been searching for a headpiece like this for a very, very, very long time... And then I simply stumbled upon it at a medieval fair (or better the "Mittelalterliches Phantasie Spectculum - MPS").

Do you know where I can find a list of these fairs and conventions? I've heard a lot about them, and am interested in going to one (or two) some day, but I don't know where to begin looking for one.Β

As deviantart outed you as living in the US Β , I do not know if they have such a strong medieval and (medieval/fantasy) LARP community as we have in Germany (and Europe in general). A friend of mine once told me there is a Renaissance Fair in Michigan each year (mind: not medieval, not fantasy).
If you happen to visit Germany, send me a message. We have medieval fairs and LARP conventions on almost every weekend, peeking - of course - during the summer months. The MPS also travels through Germany from city to city. Most famous medieval "festival" is the so called "Landshuter Hochzeit" in Bavaria, which is celebrated all three years in the city of Landshut.

My guess is that the US does not have a large medieval/fantasy LARP community. (It's very big on drooling fangirls, but, as far as I can tell, much smaller on LARPs and such.) Michigan is a bit far for me, but I'll look into it. 
My father qualified for a sailing competition (official term, regatta?) in Germany, and I've been trying to convince him to go. (Taking me with him, of course.
