Description The Caliph Hisham brought the Arab empire to its greatest extent. Covering more than five million square miles, the Caliphate was one of the largest empires in history.

The devastating war between the Byzantines and Persians crippled their empires, allowing the Arabs to absorb vast territories in a relatively short period of time. However, that momentum would not last. By 730 the Umayyad army was dealt a crippling defeat by the Khazars, destroying the image of Arab invincibility.

Invasions of the Frankish kingdom (Tours/Poitiers 732) and Byzantium (Akroinon 740) would be turned back, troubles in Transoxiana and Afghanistan, and the Berber revolt of 740 would put a stop to the empire's expansion. In 750 the Abbasids in Central Asia would topple the Umayyad dynasty and split the empire.
