I am so annoyed the official cover art doesn't get her hair short even though it clearly says it isΒ D:<
haha, but you need all the birds.

The british cover art is just charter marks. I like these better. I always got annoyed with cover art that showed the character, it's a book I like to imagine things!!
I mean how would we know I drew it without birds?!

FionaCreates In reply to neurotype-on-discord [2017-02-07 23:36:28 +0000 UTC]
yeah the fiery charter marks. I always liked them cos it gave me an idea of what this magic looked like, it's pretty unique as far as what I'd red previously.Β But yeah I've seen the originals, and the "improved" digital painting covers too... I just like the charter marks.. it's what drew me to sabriel in the first place. It was a bright white book with a golden mark on it like "OMG WHAT IS THIS THING"
TBH when I was 15 or so reading it, I always hated that she didn't have long hair cos long hair was "prettier" and more dramatic. But as an adult I've learned if I can't make drama without long hair it's not a good picture XD

Thanks!! The colour is the thing the book visualises for me the most, so I have to get it right above all else. Glad you like them!!

I read the first book in this series a couple years ago, but I never managed to read the rest because my local library didn't have them. This makes me want to go looking for them again.

They're worth it! I reread them a lot so I could never be satisfied with library copies! What would I do without being able to pick them up randomly and draw them! XD

The main character is a kind of guardian of death, she makes sure the dead things actually pass on instead of linger to do nasty things. (Hence the skull shape).
I only just noticed!! HOW COULD I MISS THE DD! Β¬_Β¬

This is breathtakingly amazing!
The Crows that build the upper part of a Skull and close in on these glowing eye things all look so dynamic and you can nearly feel the movement in this pack(?) of birds^^
I like the colors you chose here as well, as they work really well together.
My only Problem are the Eyes, as the left one seems to be to much smaller and a little bit higher than the right one.
But except from that one I don't see more things that I could criticize right now^^
And about the:" so many birds" I think it was worth the work, as the birds are a important part of the whole picture and with less of them it wouldn't look as amazing as it does now^^

Thanks for the in depth comment. I appreciate it! I see what you mean with the eye and I'll pay attention to that in future!
Yeah, I'd designed the piece round the flocking crows and it was as I was drawing them all out I thought "this is going to be a bugger to draw". Good job I like drawing birds!!

Nice! What's your weakness? Mine's uhm..........PERSPECTIVE. IT HURTS. I have to finish my credential program but...after that I want to take a year to work on my illustrations, because I'd rather be an illustrator than a teacher >__>;;;; Not a good way to start your careerΒ

Imagination/Concept.
I have a lot of physical ability, butΒ I struggle toΒ know sometimes where to apply it.
Though that was also things I learned about myself last year. I did a lot of adoptables for dA which really stretched my character design muscles. Often before I would say to myself "no you can't design it like that it's not functional" and because I was just letting myself do anything I was like "fuck functional" and I learned a lot about design and such which I can now apply wider.
Perspective is easy for me, but my brain works like a scientist so I can build things in space easily. As I said it's not doing the thing that's hard for me it's figuring out what thing to do in the first place. (this is why I like my job as illustrator people tend to tell me what to do) XD

sillyysunnyy In reply to FionaCreates [2017-01-25 00:16:38 +0000 UTC]
Haha! Yeah conceptual stuff is hard. And I saw your adoptables account (+watched it). You have some great work in there, definitely. I'm playing with the world of adoptables, myself, right now. It definitely introduces you to a range of new things.Β
I envy anyone who says perspective is easy for them.
Mind my asking what you do for illustration work? I was an animation major in school so my illustration world knowledge is...pitiful.

FionaCreates In reply to sillyysunnyy [2017-01-25 00:23:01 +0000 UTC]
I've been drawing in perspective since I was about 6 or 7 so I think it's just a tool I've had in my arsenal for a very long time.Β It's not easy so much as it makes sense to me.
As an illustrator I mostly do private work, but I'm currently working on a card game/board game which is super exciting. I have found the work that comes your way tends to tailor towards what kind of presence you have online. I deal a lot with stories and characters so that's the work I get, instead of something more mainstream like editorial or advertising. But who knows where my career may lead me! I just keep drawing and so long as I keep getting work I'm doing ok.

Ahhhh! I've been reading this series for the past few weeks (I just started Abhorsen) and it's my new fave. It was your fanarts that made me give them a shot!

FionaCreates In reply to talsbee [2017-01-24 22:53:54 +0000 UTC]
Eeeeee I still have Goldenhand to read (that's the latest one) I need to get round to that... it's rather flattering to know my fanarts poked someone into reading the books! I like how they don't have a TV show or a movie or even any definitive illustrative style (every book cover features them looking different or just charter marks...) so I get to design them however I want.
