Description Photos used are from HOTNstock of DA. A guide for how to reference photos correctly for digital art, since apparently this is not common knowledge. An alarming number of artists think it's ok to just grab any photo off the internet they feel like and use it for commercial art purposes. It's not. If enough of the art is recognizable as the original photo and you don't have permission to use said photo, you are actually in violation of copyright law. It's fine if you want to sight copy or even trace (though I suggest against it) random google photos for your own private use and reference as studies... but it's NOT ok to do so for art you post- ESPECIALLY art you sell. Imagine this- someone comes along, traces your painting, and then paints it a different colour and changes some background elements. Not cool right? We all would consider that theft. So why is it ok to take a photograph and copy the hell out of that, when the photographer spent hours out trying to get the perfect shot? It's not. Even using small sections like this you should ideally have the photographer's ok. Certainly the moment you step into tracing, especially tracing whole figures, you absolutely need an ok from the photographer. Hopefully this helps people understand what referencing is and how to do it. Excuse the somewhat less then stellar art. I whipped this up in an hour.

If you wish to share this and use it to teach others how to reference, great. However I ask you link back to the original image here, and do not modify it.

I knew before I saw your guide that it really is not okay to copy an entire photo intended for reference, and that you were supposed to try and take elements of many different photos to create your own piece. Your guide has shown me exactly how I am supposed to do that, and I thank you for it! After all, there's a difference between simply telling someone to do something and actually showing them how and telling them why. You are awesome! Thanks!

Great tutorial! I had a teacher message me once asking if it was okay for her art classes to use my stock as references. She said she was trying to teach them how to go to the right sources for references material which I thought was really great! I wish more effort was put toward teaching the younger generation about the internet and legal rights. Anyways, again, very nice work

Same here. I'd of been thrown out of art school for using refs I didn't have permission on, especially if I used more then a small section. Thanks again for allowing me to use your stock

I know... I go to a business school but plagiarism of any type of ideas or content is strictly forbidden. You can get instantly expelled for it.

Glad some places take copyright seriously! My university had some pretty strict policies. If you were caught plagiarizing in any form, including tracing you were kicked out of the class. Do it again and you were expelled entirely.

Thank you for this. I wish more people actually knew what using references means.

Amen to that. I get so frustrated when I see people misuse the term- especially when popular artists do so and put bad ideas in the heads of new artists. :/
