Very clever use of the foreground as well as the background, particularly the inclusion of the fallen branch. Most people probably wouldn't think beyond the waterfall in the background.

Thanks Blair. I usually try to include some foreground interest in my photos. I appreciate you noticing and also for adding it to your favourites

The picture has the atmosphere of a landscape painting.

I'm not sure what details particularly generate that impression. Could it be the result of a longer exposure?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FireflyPhotosAust In reply to AlecBell [2009-04-21 22:26:43 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure why that would be Alec. Most of my shots are long exposures. This was taken with my new camera and I am still getting used to the settings.

The detail and exposure are great. I prefer the higher angle of yours, but Chris's tighter crop.

Thanks Brett. It's odd how we all approach shots differently.

Bjay70 In reply to FireflyPhotosAust [2009-04-21 21:07:35 +0000 UTC]

It is. But it is not always easy to tell what is going to work until you look at them later. I have pics I thought would be great until I put them on the computor and then wonder what I was thinking. Yet my two most viewed deviations I put very little effort into taking.

I have the same problem. What looks good at the time doesn't always look good when you get home

Bjay70 In reply to FireflyPhotosAust [2009-04-22 11:36:41 +0000 UTC]

This is half the fun! All part of the learning process and keeps it challenging.
I am currently finding it difficult to find any inspiring subjects locally, and don't have much time to travel. My latest trip was for work, and the job didn't finish till dusk so very limited opportunities for photos.(except those damn roos!)

I'm having trouble working out where to go at the moment too. Since daylight saving has ended I seem to have less time available time to go out shooting. It's dark when I get home from work.

Bjay70 In reply to FireflyPhotosAust [2009-04-22 12:35:35 +0000 UTC]

I know what you mean. I seem to be driving in fantastic light, but the sun is too low by the time I get anywhere to use it. We are back to smokey conditions due to back burning, this would be great for sunray type shots if I was amongst trees.

That's why I look so forward to the weekends when there are more opportunities. I rarely work on the weekend.

I wish I had that luxury! If it is not work it is kids stopping me from venturing out.

My kids are 19 & 21 so I don't have that problem (unless I am helping them with their Uni work)

Mine are 8 and 14 so I have a few years to go.
I may have slipped into the camera shop this morning and walked out with a Tamron 90mm macro lens.Should help with some new ideas.

I'm sure that you will find a use for the 90mm macro lens. That will open up a lot more opportunities for you

I'm really glad you got over to north Lawson... was it worth it?

This is a good shot, Malcolm. I can't wait to see what you produce when you really get this new camera learned. The composition is spot on, and the location gorgeous. Moving the log was an inspiration!

FireflyPhotosAust In reply to JoyfulColor [2009-04-19 20:54:09 +0000 UTC]

Thank you Michelle

I wasn't happy with the image produced using JPEG so luckily I have the camera set so that it produces a RAW file at the same time. It took a bit of experimenting to get the result.

I keep reading that we need a foreground interest so the log was perfect
