Description
Nightshade was made for ShadyCatStudios . She is 6" tall and is my first project made of custom printed Spoonflower minky. I'm pretty happy with how she turned out, and I particularly love the crystal texture effect! She has appliquéd eyes and fused and painted cutie marks, and a bit of soft wire in her tail for posability.I was really excited to work on this project since, as I said, she's my first done with custom minky. I'm excited to do more projects in the future using custom minky as well. I learned a lot about this! It was a fantastic way to get some really detailed patterning in in ways that would have been really difficult to accomplish before. Some thoughts on the custom minky:
PROS:
- Nice silky texture
- Good color matching to digitised files
- Really fine lines and markings are possible
- Fast production and shipping (from the Berlin Spoonflower factory)
CONS:
- Printed on a base of white minky, so even with careful combing some 'flecking' of the white base showing through the color occurs, particularly at seams. I think this would be less of an issue on lighter colored prints.
- Cannot adjust pattern pieces once they are printed, so you need a really firm pattern before getting the minky printed
- Gradients do not seem to print particularly well - there was more gradiented color in her hair in the file I designed, but it was broken down into pretty solid blocks of color on the fabric.
Overall a very good experience and I'm excited to do it again!

Nice work.. about the gradients... Is weird.. couse my OC have gradient in her tail and mane.. I print a full block of purple with gradient to white. And looks really nice for me.. and she is a beanie. May I ask did you send in 300 DPI?

It's good to know that it worked out for you - maybe if I do it differently it'll work better next time? Or maybe it's because I had darker colors here? I had even higher resolution than 300 DPI.

well.. since I didnt have time to design the pattern.. I just did that a full block purple with gradient.. maybe only works in big blocks?

Interesting - So basically you want the base minky the lightest color in the pattern? Or would that offset everything? I wonder if there would be a way to almost stain it from the back side (cause you don't already put enough detail work in

If you could get the base minky to be the lightest color in the pattern, that would be awesome and counterbalance that particular flecking issue. The problem is, the company only prints on white minky, which shows through a little bit on most things. As I said, though, I think it would be less of an issue with more vibrant or lighter colors. I don't think I can dye the minky after the fact, A) because I don't have the facilities in the tiny apartment I live in, and B) because that would definitely affect the colors on the front of the minky too and ruin everything. I think the color is good enough to make it worthwhile as-is - I'm working up to doing a pony with just the mane and tail in printed minky, and in lighter more vibrant colors, so we'll see how that goes.

Oh, I thought you had selected white for the first attempt didn't realize there weren't other options :/ , by bad. You're not going to attempt dying cloth two tone along the planer axis lol, and what do you mean your apartment isn't fully dedicated to these fluff balls.

Nope, there's only one option for the base color, unfortunately. And my apartment IS fully dedicated to these fluff balls - but it's only two rooms and two people live here, so...still not enough space for dyeing, especially since you basically need a dedicated washing machine to do that and I have to use the communal apartment ones. People tend to get pissed off when they throw their clothes in the wash and they turn out purple or whatever from residual dye

This turned out so good! I was always curious if those printed minky would work well for ocs with more elaborate patterns. Like my characters, with dapple markings or with freckles! Would this be an option for future commissions?

Thanks! Yeah, I think it's a really great option! I think it would work even better on a larger plush. Printed minky is absolutely an option for future commissions now - it's a bit more expensive in terms of materials, but it makes a lot of things possible that were previously so impractical!
