Description UK/Arthur walking a dog. It was supposed to be an English Setter, but looks more like an Irish one. I think it's because I see the Irish Setter mascot on Bus Eireann all the time. @_@

I just love putting him in Oxfords. :3 The quintessential British shoe. I wanted to draw a houndstooth pattern, but at the size it's not really practical.

Pencil in my sketchbook. I seem to be drawing a lot in it lately...

Two of my favorite things, Hetalia and Irish Setters, rolled into one. I applaud you.

Arthur is a character from Hetalia, a series that anthropormizes countries. Arthur is the personification of the UK.

Thanks. Glad you like the shoes. They are my favourite but so hard to find refs for them.

Thanks. To me, he looks relaxed, but with a stick up his butt. XD No Englishmen are ever truly slouchily relaxed. HURHUR.

Damn, your sketches are just fantastic. Do you start by working out proportions and body masses or just go for it?

Bet you do/have done a lot of life drawing.

Also, don't kill me for this, but I think his face looks kinda like that of Wolfgang Grimmer from Monster... (lol)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Firnheledien In reply to lastlabyrinth [2009-05-12 15:26:51 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. Well, it depends on the sketch. I usually sketch out the outlines and then go from there. But I don't lay down as much detail in the proportions etc as I used to (because all the guidelines were too much to clean). So that might explain why his left leg is a bit too long. XP

Actually, I have never done life drawing. I mostly work from ref photos I get online. XP

Oh, you mean the journalist? I LOVE Monster btw, although I haven't fanarted it yet.

lastlabyrinth In reply to Firnheledien [2009-05-12 15:54:48 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that's what I hate about sketching guidelines, the part where I have to erase them later... I just wondered because your figures have nicely defined forms, especially in the arms and hands, and I'm surprised to hear that you haven't done life drawing, but photo refs can be very useful too. Your faces are so lively I assumed you must have spent a lot of time observing/internalizing their behavior in person.

Yes, that one. xD He is my favorite. Monster is awesome, and fan art amounts for that series are perilously low across the board, but I haven't done any myself. *contributes to the problem*

Firnheledien In reply to lastlabyrinth [2009-05-12 18:23:30 +0000 UTC]

Oh thanks a lot. It's just that I don't really have time to attend drawing classes and I don't really like being in such a formal environment. I just enjoy drawing limbs (and especially feet) and I usually start out without refs, just laying out the structure. I turn to refs only when it comes to the details or if I'm having trouble building on my skeleton.

I'm usually very emotionally involved when I'm drawing something apart from quick sketches. So everything about a piece has to feel right. Otherwise I lose motivation. XP So I like imagining different expressions and stuff but I rarely draw them out. XP Or rather, I prefer drawing expressions that tell you only half the story (and let the viewer figure out the rest).

Yea, Monster is pretty niche.

There is something incredibly fantastic about this, and I'm not sure what yet. Maybe the style, maybe your amazing art, maybe the shedding. Job well done!!!<3 Also, just have to say, I am in love with those shoes.

Thanks so much. My style is cobbled from and Akihiko Yoshida (FFXII's character designer).

Yes, I envy girls who can wear the high-heeled Oxfords. They are too uncomfortable for me. T_T

Ohh, I think America's definitely a Golden Retriever or Labrador kind of guy. Spaniels are kind of... cutesy? Tame? I don't know.

I love Golden Retrievers though. They are my favourite breed, although they are Scottish-born, so not a very American dog, in terms of pedigree.

Thanks. His legs are a biiit too long (nice thighs, Arthur! XD) though.

That's just the tint from the scanner. Most of my pencil drawings come out that slightly blue-ish colour. XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Bursting-Girl In reply to Firnheledien [2009-05-11 20:25:32 +0000 UTC]

hmm now you mention it I see what you mean. Perhaps his arse looks slightly strange too? To me, it looks like it ends a liiiittle too high up, but I'm not sure. It's a tiny tiny problem anyway, it's only since you mentioned his legs that I noticed it.

xD It's a nice colour to have sketches anyway.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Firnheledien In reply to Bursting-Girl [2009-05-11 20:38:26 +0000 UTC]

Yea, I kind of went nuts on the camera angle. Like his upper body is from a low angle, then his legs from a high angle. Think of it as a fisheye effect. And I kept erasing his feet because I wasn't happy, so I guess that's how they got stretched...
