Description I FINALLY FINISHED. MY GOD.

I don't....even know what to say. I'm both disgusted and proud with it. The anatomy mistakes are yucky, the pose is generic, and FOR GOD'S SAKES, HOW CAN THAT LIGHT SOURCE POSSIBLY MAKE HER SO SHINY LIKE THAT? OFL OFL OFL OFL

So once again, I screwed up the light source. Thank god she's an elf, and a Legend class at that, so I'm using that as my excuse as to why she is glows so bloody brightly.

Oh the other hand, I love how the coloring turned out this time. showed me this nifty trick to maniupulate colors in SAI, and I played around with it as much as I could. I couldn't seem to create the same effect as she did when I watched her though...OFL

Oh yes. Fail unicorns and fail background is fail.

But overall, I love this picture. Please get out of my face now.

Time: wellover50hours
Tools: Wacom Bamboo Tablet, SAI Paint Tool, Photoshop 7, several textures and brushes I found around the web

PS. I'm going to start on my PAID commissions and art trades this week. I'm so sorry to those who have been waiting since Christmas. I'm a complete failure. OFL

Well, you didn't really screwed up the light source, that much. It really looked good on her.
Overall is good. I don't think you really messed up the whole thing, to be honest. Seriously, there's nothing wrong with it! Don't take your option seriously. As long you can able to get good critics, you are fine. That was the advice that my sister's animation teacher, who happened to be an anime artist, gave.

*sigh* Lately, a lot of rumors coming over the GMS. I played private server, so I was told pretty much early by the GMs of the server. KMS is coming out thief and pirate revamps. And now, I have been hearing complaints on how bad those revamps was. Minus the new jobs, like Cannon Shooter. Apparently, I did some research and found the reason why. What a terrible luck, I really pity those players who used them. There is also changes on other jobs (as usual minus new jobs, or people will flare like hell). It is not the first time this kind of reaction happens.

Maybe we should make it a contest between us two, for motivation. Who can assemble their portfolio first? 8D

I've only got maybe 3 pieces for it as of now, along with a couple seconds of animation from my animation class...two from my figure drawing class, one from my Advanced Art class last year, and my AP Studio Art class...well, the whole point of the class is to assemble a portfolio, so that'll help me make some stuff. Yeah, I figured having an AP art class would be a really rare thing. But I'm really glad we have it.

Anyways, I think that portfolios have like...15-20 pieces, around. Maybe you could somehow get away with 10...? But really, I'd do a minimum of 14/15.

And no, don't put the originals in the portfolio that you send out! Ever! Most places DON'T give the work back, so definitely DEFINITELY take a picture/scan/copy it somehow!

Joyfulldreams In reply to Fishenod [2011-08-08 03:29:46 +0000 UTC]

A lot of the schools I've seen actually have you send in a digital portfolio. Like just a zip file or something with pictures of all of the pieces. Either that, or you hand hard copies in personally. Or something like that, it depends on the school.

Whether or not the portfolio is submitted with the application or separately...depends upon the school! Make sure to check your information, girl.

Fishenod In reply to Joyfulldreams [2011-08-08 04:09:12 +0000 UTC]

Gotcha. Thanks a lot. XD

Hmmm I wanna run my ideas by you for a moment. So...
1) I really really want to put my flash comic in my portfolio, but if I have to hand in a hard copy, how would I show that? :< And actually, since I had a little help on it with the art (little things, but help nontheless) do you think the colleges will scorn that?
2) Landscape of a lagoon in watercolors (theres going to be a lot, since theres so much in the little area I found...ive been meaning to paint that scene for a while, but never found the motivation to.)
3) Don't wanna say much about this, cuz I'm so excited about the idea, but it's another ocean environmental themed picture, with symbolism, done in color pencils
3) A pencil sketch of my piano.
4) Acrylic painting of a nice picture of whne I was a kid.
5) An oriental drawing of an asian girl. Maybe with cherry blossoms. (I was thinking maybe I'll do a cartoony/realistic portrayal of her. I mean, my style is becoming slightly more realistic, so if I made it a tad bit more, then maybe...? Should I use my copics for this?)
6) Another environmental thing. my friend gave me this idea. Some sorta yin-yang thing with machines eating up plant life, to show the impact of deforestation. I'm going to do this digitally...I don't think I'll be able to accomplish it with traditional means.
7) A detailed drawing of a super colorful coral. (Maybe I'll do this in copics?)
8) I had this mediocre sketch of a bunny I had my friend pose for me with in 6th grade...maybe I can do a resketch, only making it better and adding more texture to show improvement? Or would that not work? The bunny is gone now, so I'd just be taking this old picture and redrawing it, but using outside references to spice it up.
9) I had this sketch of a chair...You only see the top 3/4 of it, since I was sketching it on the cruise ship to pass time. I dunno.

That's all i have in mind for now...what do you think? :<

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Joyfulldreams In reply to Fishenod [2011-08-08 17:02:12 +0000 UTC]

You had two 3's. XD

About the Piano, you're gonna have to pick a good angle and composition for it, and make it less of a 'sketch'. Demonstrate how you can observe light and shadow and then put it on paper.

Also, you're going to have to designate a minimum size for all your pieces. They CAN'T be small on an 8.5x11'' piece of paper.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Fishenod In reply to Joyfulldreams [2011-08-08 19:06:59 +0000 UTC]

SKDHGBASKDHFBAK IM SO STUPID.

I was actually thinking for that, I'd do another kinda abtrast/symbolic one. Like drawing from a top-angle perspective. I want to show a girl playing (maybe me, just for the kicks) and she's kinda grinning as she looks up cuz her music "came to life" and I'll need to figure out how that works. Maybe choose some of my favorite songs that actually have a meaning behind them and draw that scene? Like Nutcracker. Or something. I'll figure it out...?

Minimum size? What do you mean?

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

Joyfulldreams In reply to Fishenod [2011-08-08 16:53:54 +0000 UTC]

1) Well, first I'd check to see how many of your colleges actually want a physical portfolio. I'm sure that most colleges now, if they want any form of 'hard copy', it would be all the files on a Flash Drive that you sent in the mail. I would totally say 'go for it', if it weren't for the fact that the comic is pretty long. For now, I'd keep the idea since it's really original and says a lot about you, but focus on the other stuff for now.
2) This is such an awesome idea. DO IT DO IT.
3) Another awesome awesome idea.
4) God, you can do Acrylic? Painting is so HARD. If you are decent with paints than do IT. Be very impressive, I think.
5) For this one, I'd worry less about the style you portrayed her in, but the composition of the picture itself. Try and draw some thumbnails of compositions, brainstorm, and then maybe we can talk about how exactly to go about drawing her. However you draw her will affect the mood of the drawing. And I think using copics would be a good idea. (And you don't have to talk with ME about it, you can figure it out yourself, but I could help if you want!)
6) Yet another AWESOME idea. Having a bunch of really meaningful pieces that shows your passion AND shows your skills off are really good ideas. They will gobble that kind of shit up, I'm sure.
7) Good idea! But you'll really have to think about the composition and color scheme if you use markers.
8) Hmmm....don't think this is too good of an idea. They don't care so much about how much better you've gotten since the past, but just what you are capable of NOW. I think, if you want to do a bunny, find a real bunny and draw it from life, or if you really can't get the bunny to stay still, take a picture of it for yourself and draw that. And I might try doing this one in graphite or charcoal or something, since all your other pieces are in color it seems.
9) Noooot a very good idea. If you wanna do a chair, find one in your house and draw it from life in a room where you can designate some interesting lighting or something. Again, would be better in graphite or charcoal or some form of black-and-white.

So you've got a lot of good ideas, but you could put maybe 1 more digital piece in there if you wanted, and you should do some grayscale still-lives and figure and gesture drawing. Those are IMPORTANT. Drawing from life and gesture drawing are very important things that they WILL look for. Get somebody/people to pose for you or take a class. Make an arrangement of objects on a table like fruit or bottles or something and draw it. It's cliche but should be in there at least once.

Another good idea is to put some sketchbook stuff in there, stuff that has notes written by you and shows your thought and drawing process. A lot of colleges gobble up that kind of stuff. It's one thing seeing your work, and another seeing how you MAKE it. That will really show what you know how to do.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Fishenod In reply to Joyfulldreams [2011-08-08 19:04:57 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for all the feedback! I'll keep the things you recommend and keep other tips in mind. <3 <3 <3 You're so awesome Becca. ;A;

1)I'm still concerned about the comic. I really want to include that, since it was a huge thing of mine, but I did have art help. I really don't know if the colleges will be ok with that. I mean, it was little stuff, like base coloring and linearting, things I could easily do if I had enough time. But know you...

4) Mmhm, I've dabbled with them. I kinda like them, but I always mess up on faces. I think since I'm a little more proficient with handling art materials now, I'll give acrylics another shot. It doesn't look flawless, but as you said, "decent."

5) I'll plot out some ideas for the oriental girl and come back to you. By composition, you mean what shes doing, and how she interacts with the background? I really love Japanese clothing, but in all honesty, I feel like I really should stop drawing so much Japanese related things and try doing Chinese stuff for once. It is my culture afterall.

7) Hm, I'll think about the coral. I just wanted something really colorful I can play around with colors a bit. Like color theory and suck. I find my color pencils are a little more forgiving whne I play with color theory though...just I have a much more limited collection of colors.

I'm going to replace the last two, the lame sketches, with a sepia-toned picture(sketching then going over with color pencils where the shadows and stuff are) of still life objects and a grayscale sketch. For the sepia toned picture, my friend has a nice assortment of weapons and things of that sort. I was thinking of laying out a sword with a rice hat, and maybe some other stuff for a still life sketch picture.

I feel like...perspective will be super important? Should I do some kinda city-perspective thing? I've never been too good with those, mostly cuz of the straight lines, but I'm not too eager to sit in the street and sketch a city street.

Drawing from life is just sketching a model right? Like having someone pose or still life? And what is gesture drawing?

I'm not drawing fruit. But I might do a glass or bottle. I feel like the lights and shadows of those can be really interesting to draw, and impressive to see if I do it correctly.

I don't actually have a sketchbook I use frequently. I don't really think much when I draw. I just draw. xD My drawing process is probably very unorthodox and amateurish, in any case. I'm only just starting to get used to using guidelines.

Joyfulldreams In reply to Fishenod [2011-08-08 22:36:03 +0000 UTC]

composition! you don't even know what it means? It's how the piece as a whole is arranged. Where you put different sized objects and elements, where is the negative space in proportion to the positive, use the rule of thirds to keep things from being centered and boring, using contrast and the position of the light source, along with color theory...all used to make the piece interesting pleasing to the eye, so you can direct the eye around the piece to see the things you want them to see when you want them to see it.

It seems really complicated, but I tend to think about things like composition in steps:

How big is the paper/piece going to be? Landscape or portrait? Super long/wide or standard proportions? What is the FOCAL POINT of the piece? The first thing that you want people to see, the most important part? In this case, it would be the oriental girl, right? Or it could be the umbrella she's holding, or whatever. What angle are we looking at her? Above? Below? Straight on? A little bit to the side? What side is she at? top? bottom? left? right?...where is she looking? Wherever the girl is looking, the direction her face is going, is the direction the person will look next. The girl should not be in the center, but off-center. Split the composition into a grid of 3rds and try and make her lie on one of the divisions. Wherever the girl is looking, either let it be empty space or put something interesting there. What's there? What direction is it facing, flowing? What's happening, should there be something in the foreground? What's in the background, keeping people interested and looking?

Once you've got the composition, you should think about the time of day or what the lighting will be like the location, and maybe have some ideas for colors in your head but mostly just think of contrast and light....I could go on and on, really. But I'll move on.

Having a perspective piece in there is a good idea. Landscape, city scape, anything really that involves a background in detail moving off into a vanishing point which you may or may not see, depending on the composition of the piece. Maybe the inside of a room, a street, and town, a building, a forest, a pretty landscape...instead of just drawing a background willy-nilly, looking to make sure that everything is in the right size and right place...

you should really check out this tutorial: [link] and p. 2: [link] and p.3 [link] Her tutorials are amazing and I use her tips and tricks and everything every time I try and think of a composition for something. Dont listen to me, listen to her, she knows what she's talkin' 'bout.

Gesture drawing is basically figure drawing, but the most important thing in figure drawing is not how realistic the person looks, or the shading! It's the proportion and gesture. Gesture is like the action line of the body, the thing that makes it not just drawing a person in a position, but the result of the body's own movement and direction. It makes drawings flow and not look stiff and lifeless. Having gesture to a drawing is important! The reason taking a class is so awesome is because, as awkward as you might think it is to draw a naked person, you can see the gesture so much better without the clothes blocking the way. You can see the ribcage and it's direction, the hip-bones, the gentle curves of the body...and then draw it, while I teacher demonstrates techniques and critiques your work and gives you professional advice.

But anyway, they'll be looking for proportion and gesture in your life drawings more than they'll care about the shading or composition in that particular piece.

I just am going to have to say that you should avoid drawing things like you usually do. When you're drawing a real piece, it shouldn't be just the person and the background. Everything should feel united, and a sense of unity in a piece and it's composition is what they'll be looking for. As awesome as your newly released piece is, and as awesome as the stuff with backgrounds that you draw are, you have to think about the drawing as a WHOLE. It shouldn't be 'interacting with the background', because that makes it seem like their separate things.

Like, here's an example of something with interesting (well..relatively) composition that I've been working on. Dunno if I've shown this to you yet...it's for Regal Exhibition...[link] <- The focal point is May, obviously, and the direction she is looking is down the port. I'm going to have a bunch of details in there, to make it interesting as you look down. Her arms thrown out not only show her character, but draw attention to the sides of the piece too. I have everything flowing inward, from the water to her direction of movement to everything else. Get it?
