Description An entry to =Maplebutt 's contest ([link] ). This is her OC Siena the ram ([link] )

The theme was to get out of our comport zones by drawing on of her OCs. Did I get out of my comfort zone? What comfort zone? I was out of this world that's how far away from my comfort zone I was! This really was quite a challenge
I am not used to drawing backgrounds. I avoid it completely. To make it harder I was drawing a landscape.
I am not used to drawing realistic animals. Gijinkas are really fun but I have no experience with drawing realistic ones.
Colored pencils are something new to my gallery and I haven't used them for over four years.
The sky and the river is drawn with pastels which is, again, a media I never use. At all.
While making this entry all I was going was trying to get back to my comfort zone, use the media in a way which would be somewhat acceptable to my hands, in a way that I would enjoy it more while achieving a better result. In my opinion, even after many struggles and experimenting I wasn't able to do it but I guess it's all up to you to decide whether I succeeded.

P.S.: I do realise that Siena is not a giant, I did this only to experiment more both on the animal and the landscape. Also I do know that Siena has ears however I noticed that rams have their ears under their horns and not above (as it is drawn by =Maplebutt ). I wanted to make the drawing of the ram as realistic as possible and as a result the ears were not drawn (they are hidden by the horns)

Media: Colored pencils, blue, while and yellow pastels, HB, 4B and 7B pencils

The animal form looks pretty good overall. I like that you used several different media to get this work complete. I very much like that transition of value to highlight on the front leg. It is quite smooth, but you can still notice the texture of the animal. The same does for the head where you achieved a similar effect. I think the back an body look a bit unfinished when compared to the other areas I mentioned. It might need blended a little more? It looks as though you have two ways that you are comfortable working and you have worked in those styles in different parts of this work. I feel similar about the mountains, which look a bit unfinished in spots. From reading your background on this work I get that you were experimenting and pushing your skills. I think overall you are doing a really good job. I think the ram looks pretty realistic. It also seems like this is a work in progress so I can't wait to see It when you finish it. Overall, you did a great job on this. Backgrounds are difficult and so is drawing realism!

Thank you very much for the lovely comment! I'm glad you like it! And thank you very much for pointing out how the back seems unfinished, too.
Although sorry to disappoint you but this is a finished piece..

Very nicely drawn/crafted. This peice has a very warm and truly outward feel. I am tempted to make a joke, but I decided not to, due to ramifications XD!

Hi there! At long last, here is the critique you requested Sorry it took me so long to get to you

I am really impressed with this piece, especially when you explained that everything about this piece was created out of your comfort zone! The colors are beautiful with amazing work on the shading and blending, and the shadows look really consistent (especially on the hills) - you can clearly see where the light source is coming from. The anatomy of the ram is accurate and well detailed, especially his head, and it definitely doesn't look amateur-ish. I've looked some other pieces of your art, and you've got a very unique and interesting style that definitely shows through in this piece too, so well done with this piece!

If I had to critique anything, though, I would say that although you've explained why you did so in the author's comment section, it looks a little odd that the ram is so much larger than the hills he's standing between. Also, I'm not sure what's on the top of his head... is that just a patch of his coat that's colored differently?

Other than those two things, though, I think this piece was very skillfully done, and well detailed

That's okay! I'm glad you found the time c:
I really appreciate all the lovely comments on the artwork and I'm glad you like it! I'm very happy about the fact that, as I can see, you are a write however you manage to appreciate other forms of art

About the hair on the ram's head.. That's actually in the original design just like the collar [link] I guess that wasn't expressed in the drawing well enough since it confuses you, sorry

And again, thank you very much for taking the time to write such a lovely comment, I really appreciate the compliments and the help c:

Haha oh, yes definitely! I think all forms of art are beautiful and creative in their own way My sister (~artandmusic4life ) is a traditional/digital artist, so I've gotten a little bit educated on the lingo for that type of art, if you know what I mean, haha

Ohhh I see, yeah that makes more sense now

You're very welcome! I love critiquing because it gives me the opportunity to see a lot of really cool art, and the artist get more comments
