Description The Depth of Life propels the viewer into a personal journey of someone who is reaching out to freedom and dreams, making personal choices, safeguarding secrets and coming out of the comfort zone to face new challenges and have new experiences.

My main objective during the beginning stage of conceptualising was to create a series of images that were fundamental to what we experience in our lives. It is a series whereby almost everyone can relate to by being in that situation at some point in time. In this series, the concepts are carefully blended with levitation photography.
The human mind sees things in slow-motion when it is undergoing stress, as though time is slowing down. This was carefully taken into account when creating the series.

I am greatly inspired by Brookeshaden, a photographer who specialises in creating surreal concepts by using the concept of levitation. Hence, I took on a challenge to experiment with a
new technique for this series and to enhance the vision of the concepts.

The Depth of Life is a series of works created for the NOISE TAP Exhibition Showcase 2012.

Goodness! A DD! Thank you so much! I received a few comments about the hole in one of the pigeons and the shadow. I have taken that into account and re-edited the photograph. Thanks for noticing it

Great photo. Love the concept. However, the cuts and bruises should have been a bit more subtle. It looks too unrealistic. I understand that the legs were in motion, so the injuries had to be more pronounced so they could be seen. Either way, the legs should have been more in focus.
Also, the outlets on the bottom really should be digitally removed. It's a bit distracting.
But it's a great photo overall.

Thank you for your comment and critiques. I was told by my mentor to blur the legs to create motion. I agree with you on the outlets one and the fact that the injuries could have been more obvious. Anyhow, thanks once again and I will take this into consideration for my future works! Have a good day

Aw, well thank YOU for taking it so well and replying! Don't take my comment as me not liking the photo. It was just a bit of constructive criticism. It really is a great photo, and I wish I could take one like this.

I really like the messages coming through this, but one thing bugs me.

There's a bit of a consistency issue with her weightlessness. Her dress is reacting as through she were mid-air (which, birds considered, is I think the point). But her hair is completely anti-gravity, as though underwater. It should match the direction of flow with the dress.

Also, now that I'm looking at it, it might be a more natural look if you position the birds on a horizontal mirror to their current locations. Like... Take the one on the bottom right, for example. Its head is tilted down, and its wings are spread as if it were stopping instead of propelling upward or moving forward. To give it the illusion of focusing on the freedom (the window), it would be better placed where the top right bird is now.

What is the difference between an overlay and a photo manipulation? This is clearly a photo manipulation, and should not even be in the photography category, as it is not true photography...those awful bird forms on the top give that away as well as the fact that the shadows do not even come close to matching the directionality of the light source.

It's an interesting subject though.

Absolutly stunning

fudaryli [2012-03-07 22:35:05 +0000 UTC]

the shadow of the pigeons does not correspond to the light source and those pigeons above looks so very fake.
you could use gaussian blur instead of only opacity and a little brush-blur.....shadows always have a little distortion from the original shape.
out of focus is not the same than motion blur.

i hope my comment doesn't bother you, it is only an advise from a professional congrats on the DD

I love this picture, but I was wondering:
-Has the girl in the picture been cutting herself? Those appear to be ban-aids on her legs, and if so, was she cutting herself hoping to find freedom, if only for a minute, yet it comes with a price of being caged forever?
-Who is this a picture of? I'm just curious.

Hey there, the cuts and bruises depict struggle and obstacles while she's reaching out to freedom. The underlying message to achieve freedom, struggle and obstacles has to to be overcome so it comes with a price. Hence, the title. The model is my friend, Kimberly Meagan

This picture has such a dreamlike feeling to it, like a clear pool of water under sunlight in strangely clean marble ruins.
