Description Around the end of August, there was a tease on who the next character was in a Direct. It was announced that the next character would be a character from Arc System Works' Guilty Gear series. The teaser showed 8 characters from the first game, one of which was going to join the roster. The characters shown were Sol Badguy, Ky Kiske, May, Axl Low, Millia Rage, Potemkin, Testament, and Zato-ONE.

Trailer begins in the sky, where we see the Great Fox fly across the sky with Fox at the helm. Samus then passes by in her Gunship, followed by Sonic in his Tornado, Bowser in his Airship, Captain Falcon in the Falcon Flyer, Meta Knight in the Halberd, and Wolf in his Wolfen. Suddenly, an armada of airships resembling sea creatures came in their way, followed by a huge flagship shaped like a whale. The Great Fox dispatches Fox in an Arwing, with Bowser hopping onto his Koopa Clown Car, and the fighters all head for the whale ship. The gang all land on the top of the whale ship, looking around the place to see a way in from the top. However, a splash was heard from the top, causing confusion in the group considering that they were millions of feet up in the air, not near the ocean. Suddenly, a dolphin was seen jumping up high in the sky with someone riding it on its back, covering the sun as it made its way down on the ship. It dove into a water portal it formed as it was close to landing, leaving its rider behind as they made a landing pose, holding a giant anchor. The fighters all stared at the rider, getting themselves ready in case they attacked. The rider stood up, revealing themselves to be a little girl with a pirate's hat, holding not just a huge anchor, but also a Smash Invite, where they gleefully show to the fighters, surprising them. The new challenger then called for the dolphin, where it emerged through a water portal beneath her, and charged toward the fighters with her riding it.

"Totsugeki!" She shouts as the dolphin charged forward, just in time for her splash screen.

MAY DROPS THE ANCHOR!

Yep. Of all of the Guilty Gear characters shown in the teaser, May was ultimately chosen to be our next character.

Like all of the fighting game characters, May faces toward her opponents in one-on-one matches. May's moveset is identical to how she plays in the Guilty Gear series, with some of her specials being part of her moveset. Even her moving air dodge is her Air Dash animation. Though some of her specials were used for certain attacks...

Neutral Attack combo: Standing Punch, Standing Close Slash, Standing Far Slash, and Standing Heavy Slash in that order
Side Tilt: Standing Kick
Up Tilt: Crouch Heavy Slash (Xrd)
Down Tilt: Standing Dust

Dash Attack: Crouch Forward Kick

Side Smash: Forward Heavy Slash
Up Smash: Mist Finer

Down Smash: May Dynamic

Neutral Aerial: Jump Slash
Up Aerial: Jump Dust

Down Aerial: Down Jump Heavy Slash

Forward Aerial: Ensenga?

Back Aerial: Jump Heavy Slash

Pummel: Crouch Punch
Forward Throw: Forward Punch
Back Throw: Throw
Up Throw: Overhead Kiss
Down Throw: Air Throw

May also comes with her unique gimmick: Her Tension meter. This meter slowly fills when May walks, runs, jumps, and attacks. However, if May shields herself from attacks, dodges, or misses an attack, she will receive a Negative Penalty, which resets the meter back to 0.

When the meter is full, May will be able to perform one of two Overdrive attacks...

Great Yamada Attack - May summons a pink whale to jump and squash her foes to deal massive damage. To perform this move, input down, forward, down, forward, followed by either attack, special, or side taunt.

The Wonderful and Dynamic Goshogawara - May will whistle to summon an orca that leaps up high and dives back down to create an explosive splash, dealing massive damage to those who couldn't avoid this attack. To perform this move, input forward, down, back, followed by either attack, special, or side taunt.

For the Specials, like Ryu, Ken, and Terry, May has regular inputs, and the stronger command inputs.

Neutral Special - Applause for the Victim: Summon a dolphin and make a ring appear ahead of it, where it'll then jump through it, acting as a projectile. If you tap the button, the dolphin will jump at an arc. If you hold the button, the dolphin will leap forward. The input version of this attack makes the dolphin go further in distance. To perform, input back, down, forward, followed by either attack, special, or side taunt.

Side Special - Mr. Dolphin: Summon a dolphin and ride it as it charges forward to hit someone, or leap up high if you hold diagonally upwards. With the horizontal version's far distance, this move works great as a side recovery, with the vertical version also functioning as an upward recovery. However, when the dolphin manages to hit someone or something, the attack cancels out from going any further. If the vertical version is used at a high height, May won't stop falling until she hits either a wall or the ground, so be careful while trying to use this move as a recovery. The input version of this attack makes May go further in distance. To perform the horizontal version, hold back, then input forward, followed by either attack, special, or side taunt. To perform the vertical version, hold down, then input up, followed by either attack, special, or side taunt.

Up Special - Restive Rolling: Perform a fast somersault swing leap that always moves diagonally upwards. The input version deals more knockback to your opponents. To perform, input forward, down, diagonally down, followed by either attack, special, or side taunt.

Down Special - Arisugawa Sparkle: Summon a seal bouncing a beach ball on its nose as it surfaces up, then it spikes it downward with its tail to hit foes close by. The input version makes the seal spike the ball at a longer distance. The perform, input down, back, followed by either attack, special, or side taunt.

Final Smash - And Then She Said... Farewell: May performs her Instant Kill, where she tries to catch a foe or two by performing her Forward Heavy Slash to knock them out with her anchor. The victim (or one of them) will wake up, finding themselves inside a cannon, where May then peeks inside and says "Oh, you're in there good!" The camera then pans out, revealing to take place on top of the Super Mayship, where she, along with her associate, April, fire the cannon to launch their foe(s) away into oblivion. If someone was over 100%, this attack will launch them into the blast zone automatically.

Included with May is her home stage, the Ultra Mayship from Guilty Gear -Strive-. While her home stage from that game was the Jellyfish Skyarium, it made more sense for the fight to take place on the Jellyfish Pirates' flagship rather than the green platforms carried by the stingray ships. Speaking of stingray ships, not only do they fly in the background carrying said green platforms and giant washing machines, the fish, dolphin and jellyfish ships also fly around. Some of the latter three ships even fly down to act as platforms, like the Arwings and Wolfens in Corneria, but without them rolling or shooting lasers. In the upper deck of the Mayship, you can see Johnny and April looking out in the distances, and sometimes they spectate the match above.

However, in just a few seconds, in the background, a stingray ship will fly up from below carrying a green platform. Said platform will have two characters from the Guilty Gear series make a cameo to spectate the current match, each one arriving in pairs in a randomized order. There's Sol Badguy and Ky Kiske, Jack-O' Valentine and Millia Rage, Axl Low and Anji Mito, Leo Whitefang and Potemkin, and finally, Zato-ONE and Testament.

May also comes with the following Trophies that will be installed into the game:
