Chivalrous - Generous - Wise - Caring - Traditional - Racist - Stubborn - Grumpy - Severe
Chivalrous - courteous and gallant, especially toward women. [Positive]
--- He is always the sort to hold a door open for another, help someone with their bags and give up his seat for a woman. He sticks to the old-fashioned ideals of giving your best, and treating others as you wish to be treated.
Generous - showing a readiness to give more of something, as money or time, than is strictly necessary or expected. [Positive]
--- One of his few traits that can sometimes go against the grain, Ollin is generous, and sometimes forgives when he probably shouldn't. Some see him a too lenient on the disabled, offering them too many avenues to be productive. In his family life he spoils his children, as if to try to make up for their lack of a mother figure.
Wise - having or showing experience, knowledge, and good judgment. [Positive]
--- He has been through a lot, and has seen others go through a lot, and he learned lessons from every tale. He gives good advice, and can come up with clever solutions where it seems things have hit a wall. He tries hard to never steer people wrong.
Caring - displaying kindness and concern for others. [Positive]
--- He is very much a softie under his grumpy exterior, though it can be hard to get him to show it sometimes. He is extremely dedicated to his herd, and truly gives his all to try to improve things for everyone's happiness.
Traditional - existing in or as part of a tradition; long-established. [Neutral]
--- Ollin is traditional in all aspects. The Talori culture, religion, mannerisms. He does not approve of deviants, and will never shift away from the traditional himself. To this end, he hasn't remarried (and never will without Cascade's blessing).
Racist - having or showing the belief that a particular race is superior to another. [Negative]
--- A product of his time and place, Ollin harbors strong dislike for pegasi, and does believe hippocampi to be the superior race. While he keeps his racial pride largely unspoken, he has voiced his distaste for the winged and those who support them. The recent events have only worsened his prejudice.
Stubborn - having or showing dogged determination not to change one's attitude or position on something, especially in spite of good arguments or reasons to do so. [Negative]
--- Ollin can be hard to waver. He has no patience for those voicing change to long-standing tradition, and when he hears a bad idea (save from those ranking above him) he will loudly say so. Perhaps it's borne from his desire to help the herd as best he can, but it too often takes a negative route. He's fairly known for being bull-headed.
Grumpy - bad-tempered and sulky. [Negative]
--- He doesn't come off as a nice fellow, though he deep down is. It's not uncommon for him to give a bad first impression, which ends up wasting time trying to undo the initial damage. This grumpiness is most often directed at pegasi and teenagers.
Severe - strict or harsh; intense. [Negative]
--- If someone does something bad, Ollin can come down on them like a ton of bricks. Though he can be forgiving in certain circumstances, he doles out harsh punishments to those he feels are beyond help. Once his intensity switch has been flipped, it's hard to get him to change his mind. Thankfully, it can be rather hard to trigger in the first place.
History:
[Childhood]
Ollin was born into the upper echelon of Talori society. Son of a councilor and a cleric, it was frankly quite obvious he would be keenly aware of the expectations of the herd even from a young age. And despite his rather grand status, his father treated him sternly, making sure he was well prepared for the often cut-throat world of politics and pressure.
He took to it quite well. This too, was expected. His father's father had been a councilor a well, and Ollin's birth had happened mere days after the old stallion's passing. Many believed him to house his grandfather's soul. Regardless of whether this was the true cause of his proficiency, it did bring him a small measure of respect even in his young years.
[Teenage]
Ollin's teen year were equal parts awkward and obscenely busy. While his father and mother taught him history, politics and geography, he learned little about making connections with others. He was a loner in his teenage years, a stumbling and awkward mess, socially inept, all knobbly legs and cracking voice. There was teasing, but it never really impacted him, for he never spent enough time with others for the barbs to dig deep. The distance, though it led him to be rather closed off, did serve to embed his values deeply into his psyche. When one has no opposing viewpoints in their life, they often fail to see the flaws in what they believe, and this is very true of Ollin.
And when he saw the late Divine fall, from his seat beside his father, it only impressed upon him that the villains of his stories were villains indeed.
It was in his late teens when the marriage arranged at his birth was undertaken. He was wed to an Emissary's daughter, in a traditional ceremony. He believed his coupling blessed, and was eager to begin his adult life.
[Adult]
His adult years saw much improvement. He grew into his frame, his voice, and his role. He worked under his father, training still in the hopes of taking on the job of councilor as he aged. And he truly did wish to. Working with his sire, he had the opportunity to meet many members of his herd, to view the different walks of life, the ins and outs of Inaria and Aquore beyond. He saw the strength of his people, their beauty and perseverance. And though now he met others who did not agree with his views, they were too firmly entrenched to be easily altered.
He wanted to help guide his people. To be their voice, to take their concerns and their wishes to the emperor. He wanted to punish the wicked, and protect the pure.
His early thirties would bring about many changes in his life.
His father passed away one evening, unexpected and sudden. A stroke, the clerics said. The funeral was a somber affair, for the stallion had been greatly loved. Ollin sought support from his wife, but was met only with coldness, and he knew not why. His mother too was distant, blaming herself for not being there on the evening of her husband's death, as though she thought she could have saved him. So Ollin grieved alone.
It was a month later that Ollin found his wife to be pregnant. His happiness was devoured by the misery of the mare. She was furious. Ollin couldn't understand why. To him, the traditional life was ideal, but his wife wanted freedom. She had buried deep her resentment, so when it was finally unleashed, it caught Ollin entirely off-guard. He had thought they shared love, shared a vision of their lives together. Now he found she wanted nothing of him. He was crushed. Their relationship grew strained and on her end- vindictive. He tolerated it as best he could, for his marriage was sacred, and eternal. He hoped that with time her harsh edges would soften.
He was granted his father's rank. It kept him away from his wife often, and that seemed to please the mare, even as it hurt him. Finding no acceptance from her, he threw his everything into his job. And it did improve his outlook. To help, to be needed, it filled his needs.
The birth of his son was joyous. Though his wife shunned the child, Ollin gladly took on the role of father. He loved the little colt, and spent as much time as he could with the babe.
It was mere weeks after his son's birth that his wife left. Though deeply saddened by this, he couldn't say it was unexpected. Some of his resentment for the less traditional Talori may spring from this event, but he would deny it. He moved on as best he could, now a single father to his son. Now and then he heard rumors of sightings of the mare, but in his eyes he was a widower. To him, his wife was dead.
After the tumultuous few years, his life settled into a smoother pattern. He split his focus between his child and his rank, giving both the firm care and guidance he had been taught to give. Strict, yet kind. Firm, but fair. Severe, yet forgiving.
He made friends for the first time in his life. Forged bonds stronger than his matrimony had been. Sometimes these bonds were tested. Some broke. Some held. As the years passed on, he found himself the father to another child, one not of his blood. A friend of his found herself in trouble beyond repair, and her teenage daughter in need of care. Disapproving of his friend though he was, he welcomed young Adeline into his home and his heart.
After years of work, he had the pleasure of acting as a psuedo mentor to Nagisa when she first joined the council, though she quickly outgrew any need for mentoring.
More recently, his mother passed, old age finally taking her. This loss was easier to deal with, for he was there to watch her go. He smiled at her funeral, knowing Cascade would reward her for a life well-spent.
He would work to make sure the rest of his life was too.
Notes:
- Basically an asshole with a heart of gold (except towards pegasi, they're just fucked).
- Is an absolute shit swimmer.
- Gets really pissy if people compare his fronds to wings. Don't do it.
- Is in very good shape for his age; mostly because the disabled are looked down upon in Talori society. He strives to keep himself fit and in working order.
