Description An Ordinarius of the Placidi Valentiniani Felices, c.a. 419-454 AD. He wears a belt of the Peudo-Iberian type based on a find from the Tenes horde in Algeria, which dates to after 429 AD. His greaves are based on the 3rd century Carlisle and Kunzig examples, and his Manica is based on the 5th century find in Bowe, England. In this image he wears a Sagum, rather than a Mantion, and has a crossbow brooch of a late 4th century style. The boots are based off the Vergilius Vaticanus manuscript, and the Helmet is based partly off of the River Maas, Augst, and Intercisa examples. The Sword is of the type found at Pouan and dates to 450-ish. The shield boss is also a 5th century example found in Gaul.

It's interesting seeing figures depicted on the shield. Is that the emperor or commander? I didn't really know of this, always happy to learn!

Yes, displaying the Emperor on shields was not all that uncommon. Several units in the Notitia have it.
